Fueling problem
Don't know if this is just me being stupid, but when I am pumping gas in my 63 with the original gas tank, the pump never shuts itself off. What do I need to do differently?

Re: Fueling problem
I think it's because of the large filler neck on our trucks allow the fuel to splash back. Todays cars and trucks have a anti splash shield that allows the spout from the pump to go through, but restricts the back splash to occur which trips the nozzle shutting the pump.

Re: Fueling problem
It sounds like you have leak in your tank/filler neck. The pump will shut do to the pressure build up by filling the tank. If doesn't sense the pressure it won't shut off... Are you finding gas or strong smell of gas in the cab?

Re: Fueling problem
When filling my '60-'66 Chevy/GMC trucks, I wrap a paper towel around a fuel pump spout, to avoid the fuel sprewing on the paint and they shut off every time. I always set the handle on the first stop...slower, but not as messy and the pump always shuts off.

Re: Fueling problem
I got tired of the gas bath too. I got to where I could listen to the sound as the gas was flowing into the tank. The sound changed when the gas got up to the filler tube and I stopped then.
It's an aquired skill and won't work if you are at a noisey gas station. |
