Which Year Boxes Will Fit?

Hey all...I'm looking at replacing the box on my 80 GMC C25. Just wondering what years of boxes will crossover? Will any 73-87 box be useable and look correct, or will only certain years work? Reason I ask is I can pick up a good useable mid-80s box with only very light surface rust for $200, less than cost of repairing the one on the truck now.

Re: Which Year Boxes Will Fit?

pretty sure the only diference is the earlier ones had a round gas filler hole and the later ones had a square one.. the tailgates are a little diferent but you can whitch your old one on if you want with your old brackets

They will both be the gas filler door type beds so the only difference is the tail gate in your case.

They started switching over from the exposed gas cap beds in 78. Not sure if it was an option or a mid year change but some 78's (like my K20 built in Nov 1977) have the exposed gas cap and my brothers old 78 had the filler door type bed.

Re: Which Year Boxes Will Fit?

If you are talking fleetside beds, the beds themselves for 1/2 and 3/4 ton trucks will interchange, but the bolt patterns don't always match. Check the bolt location pattern and length of bolts, as well as the gas tank setup before you buy one for your truck. If you need to replace the filler neck and fill hose(s) with new ones, your $200 box might cost $400 - unless you find good junk parts cheap. I have noticed that used parts for these old trucks are not selling as cheap as they should for the number that are out there.

Re: Which Year Boxes Will Fit?

FYI
A neighbour of mine fixed a white pickup that it looks like he put a 88 size box on a earlier 80's year cab,the cab looked wider then the box.I can see about a pic it's close to my house
