which radiator/tranny cooler? - The 1947 - Present Chevrolet & GMC Truck Message Board Network

It is time for me to purchase a radiator for the '59. It has a 375hp small block and 700r4 tranny. I was going to purchase one of Jegs' 22x19" universal radiators. I have seen that other guys have done this. What would I do to keep my tranny cool? Can I use one of these radiators? What do you guys do to keep your transmissons cool? Thank you for the help!

any thoughts? I guess i'm asking if one of these heavy duty 10" x 20" x 3/4" tranny coolers would be enough to keep the tranny cool?

Any one? Am I heading in the wrong direction here? I wanted to get this radiator ordered but not if its not going to work for me. Maybe i'm just being cheap!?

Hey feller, I went with the Cool Craft radiator for my BBC '69. It hasn't got here yet as they build them to fit as original & I also ordered an Aluminum shroud. Check them out, on Ebay or the website.

While We make some nice aluminum bolt-in radsm I think the 22x19 should be OK. Based on surface are and fin count, it should be able to cool about 380hp, - without A/C. If you can fit the 24 x 19 (and it will), use that one, it cools to about 405 hp, or 365 w A/C.The trans cooler your looking at is fine, mount it as low as you can.

No problem, remember that the factory style 'in tank' trans coolers were very small. I usually use a 24" tube style coolermounted below the rad, or on the frame rail (outboard - pass side) try not to blocck air from the rad. Also, make up some trim pieces to force air from the grill area to go through the rad, not around it. I fab them up from .065 alum. and trim them with edge guard. Every little bit helps in the desert.

When I converted to auto trans in 85 I used a condenser out of a vending machine mounted in front of the radiator. This time I put it off the frame under the cab. I allowed for a temp gauge and room for a fan if it does not get enough air.
