Big Block AD's look here
I was talking to a guy at cruise night and he has a 51 Chev Fleetline that he put a small block in, Long story short he had to go with a firewall mounted brake booster because the pedal rod in the engine compartment wouldn't clear the engine.
I'd like to go with an underfloor master cylinder with an auto so no clutch pedal to worry about. My question is any of you that put big blocks (or even small blocks) in an AD truck had clearance issues with the brake pedal?

I am doing a big block but I used the under dash unit and that came with the pedal assembly. I am sure there are others on here with BB and SB so someone should be able to help you.

I have a 50 with BBC and T400 and some tight headers I found at a swap meet. I have a CPP under floor unit with power brakes and there is no clearance issues. Mine has a stock position firewall.

I think it has more to do with where you set the engine in the truck.
I put a lot of miles on the 48 with a 283 bolted to a 50's/60's V8 truck bellhousing which bolted to the stock center crossmember. No real clearance issues except for the exhaust and steering box thing. It was pretty tight on the firewall with that setup. I don't think there would be room with a bigblock to do it without modifying the firewall to clear the heads. When I subframed the truck and put a 350 with Turbo 400 in it I had the master cylinder and booster on the firewall but it was a big ugly zit on an otherwise clean firewall and I don't intend to do it again. |

Ya got me scratching my head on this one. I have done a few V-8 swaps on pre-55 Chevy cars and never had a problem with the stock brake pedal. Maybe you are thinking about the handbrake linkage instead? The stock handbrake is mounted to the right of the steering column and absolutely has to go somewhere else with any kind of V-8 swap.
Apart from the handbrake and the firewall ribs, V-8 installs in the cars are actually easier than in AD trucks because you can get the exhaust to clear without having to move the steering. Ray Last edited by raycow; 08-06-2010 at 05:51 PM. |

I looked real hard at his Fleetline and looked at my Dad's 51 Deluxe 2dr that still has the 6 in it, and I can definately see where the stock pedals are in the way. This one is the only V8 swap car I have seen so I don't know much about it, if there were more around here I could have more to go on.
He had me alittle worried about my pickup but I don't think he has done any trucks, just 30s,40s,and 50's cars.
