finally gonna do it -how many inches

Finally figured out what bumper I wanted after getting an aftermarket one for a 81-87 & another off of a 80 something burb. Had one I liked I got from bone yard years ago but wasn't in show condition > good driver condition< . After all this bumper madness , realized what Iwanted & i found today was from a 73-80 fleetside. The casting is totally different from a 81-87 & the ends dont flare around the rear quarter panel like the 81- 87's. & they fit the 81-87's. Queastion is how many inches should Igo in to make it look better,.
1. 1 in & it would be flush with the tail gat6e lookibng down
2. can only go back 1.3/4 in before it hits the rear quarter panel
3. Ive heard some of you going in 3 in's

4. to me 1 in would make it flush with the tailgate
5 what have the rest of you done?

Isee what you did .IT IS LIKE A BUMPER ROLL PAN . But how did ypu get it back that far witout cutting the back of the rear quarter panel . there is only approx. 2 in that you can go before the back inner edge of the bumper hits the rear quarter panel.( Inner edge of the wrap around ends)

Re: finally gonna do it -how many inches

I just finished moving my bumper in this past weekend. Mine seemed to stick out a mile. I cut my outer brackets in half, then mounted each half in their respective places. I had to bend the pieces bolted to the frame towards the front if the truck. It is a 2 person job to hold the bumper up and clamp the two pieces together and make sure everything is even. After we got it right where we wanted it I heavily tacked the brackets together then removed everything to weld them solid. The two pieces are overlapped and welded everywhere they touch. I don't have pics of the finished brackets but I can take some this evening. I'm also thinking I will get another pair of outer brackets and use the overlapped ones as a template to make some that are more pleasing to the eye and look factory.

Re: finally gonna do it -how many inches

Thanks for the responses guys. Ijust wanted to close up the gap a little > maybe just go in an inch or so. Cant you just redrill holes in your frame & do it that way without the welding . Iknow if Iuse both brackets on each side I will have to cut one off a little where it butts up against the frame (Ithink) . Or would it be better to redrill holes in your brackets instead of your frame ? Also I dont weld.

Yes you can, thats what I did. We removed the bumper and tucked it in about 2.5-3". Dont just measure and drill. Make sure that you tuck it in correctly. I would recommend a friend or two to help mark the holes and during drilling.

Re: finally gonna do it -how many inches

If you have the longer springs in the rear there is minimal room to move the brackets before you hit the rear hangers
