Dilemma 65 swb or 63 burb - The 1947 - Present Chevrolet & GMC Truck Message Board Network

After looking for about 6 months I finally found a truck to build.A 65 swb step ,bbw,bone stock ranch truck with minor rust in the rockers and very little body damage.The plan is to upgrade suspension and brakes drop the 402/t350 in the garage in it and have some fun.My problem is that this weekend I found a 63 gmc suburban custom cab with great chrome and minimal body damage for $700.I really can not build both at this time and am having trouble deciding what to do.Sell the 65 which took forever to find,or let the gmc get away?I have almost everything in the garage to make the 65 a driver.The gmc needs a windshield and 1 doorglass and 1 vent window glass.How expensive/difficult to find are the glass seals for the burb?What do ya'll think?

hell for only $700 I would just buy and store it... and work on the other one, or vice versa

That would be the plan if I had a place to store it.I had to sell another project to get this one.No room.

You could allways rent a spot at your local storge place till the 65 is a driver then bring the burb home... Thats what i would do if it was me...

I lost a prized 48 Chevy coupe during a divorce due to lack of storage, so I understand how costly space can be. I knew it would be at least a year before I could do anything with it, and eventually the storage cost would be more than I could afford. I'd suggest the question you should ask yourself is which type would you prefer to own. Each has advantages, and I've seen some magnificent examples of suburbans, but they have zero appeal to me. If you really love the design better than a pickup that should be the answer. On the other hand, how much more could you get done on the the 65 with that $700.

Pickups come around more often than a nice burb, The burb in my opinion could be a great all around rod to build. You can take your girl for a ride in the pickup but you can take the gang in the burb.

Hmmm, thats a tuffy. I love my 63' BBW ... but I've always wanted a Burban....specifically a '63.

$700 would get you pretty far on the truck, though.

Could you make a deal with the burban owner, to give him payments, while you finish up the '65 ?

That way, it would be 'stored' and you wouldn't lose it...

The owner of the burb is losing his storage .I bought the truck to have a fun hot rod.I have always wanted an older burb for a daily driver.If I can find a way ,I will buy the burb and stash it.No room at my house.

i vote pickup - but if you like burbs (which it sounds like you do) - I'd ask this: what do you want to do with this thing when done? If you've got a family that can cruise around with you - then go for the burb. If it's just you and the dog, then, well, dogs love pickups. I'm like markeb01, burbs don't do much for me, but I've also seen some incredible examples on here (so I think I'm coming around to the idea).

I've had to sell vehicles for storage also, it's a heartbreaker (and strangely, it was because of a divorce too... hmm). Guess I need a woman that likes old trucks and smelly dogs. And me!

I think it simply comes down to preference - if you like em equally, then I'd go burb since they are more rare.

I have been hunting a burb for a while now, if you wouldn't mind I would love to take a look at it if you don't plan on buying it. I am right down the road from you....

my suggestion, buy the burb for the parts u need for the truck. if it would only take you 2-3 months to put the truck together with the parts u already have, then rent a storage unit for 3 months. But, here is the kicker and a way for u to get it done in time, pay for only 3 months up front and tell yourself u have to have the truck driveable by then. A windsheild will cost $200+/-, a door glass $150+/-, see we are already at $350, which is half of the burb.

Buy the burb

You've got to get the 'burb. Being a '63, it's the best of all worlds: cool wrap-around windshield, and the cheaper front suspension to build (meaning it's NOT the '60-'62 torsion bar).
It'll haul whatever you want, just like a pick-up. 4x8 sheets of plywood sit flat on the floor between the wheel wells.
If you've got kids, it's the IDEAL vintage truck.

Plus, you just never see a '60-'66 Suburban. I've had my '61 for 5 years now, and have seen five or six others--and I get out A LOT--I run a swap meet, and go to car shows for my job.

Vintage trucks always raise a smile. A vintage Suburban ALWAYS leads to a conversation.

Good decision, you won't regret it. Burbs are cool no matter what, especially a '63.
