Ah the age old question....What is this for??
Well maybe not the age old question, i have my thoughts on what this is for. I'm guessing its a recirculation for the crank case. My main question is do i need it? Since i just installed my new summit carb, it wont fit on the new air horn. So i just threw a regular breather on, and now i get an excessive amount of smoke coming from the breather. Is this normal? or is that a sign of significant wear on my engine? Also i did a massive search here and various other websites as to the plumping of the heater hoses. I just installed my new heater core and im trying to figure out the correct plumping. here are a few pics of the recirculation to the air horn off my old carb, and the various locations for the heater hoses on the block. Can anyone please make sense of all this for me? Thank you in advance.
the air horn adapter. where the adapter originally connected heater hose connection points. what the book shows. note: i have no heater hose connections on my radiator, they only seem to be on my water pump, and my intake. im assuming the large plug on the water pump is for a bypass/block heater hook-up, and the small one on the side could possibly be a return considering the flow of water?? i'm not sure, yall are the experts here so i will go off the best advice given.

"smoke" out of the breather = blow by=not so good but, it is still running. Usually rings--usually.
Looks like you need the hose nipples to re-connect your heater. Bud |

The yellow(intake man) to lower side 5/8" hose.
White upper hose to pump 3/4" Your breather will work okay.

The breather hose was for filtered intake air. The chrome one you installed will work fine, as long as you have a PCV valve in the other valve cover. If you don't run a PCV valve, it will spew an oily mist all over.

Do you got a pvc on the other valve cover. If you do it might be plugged and not working.

Re: Ah the age old question....What is this for??
Yeah, i have the nipples to connect the hoses back up. and i compared the "white" mark as john put it with my 3/4 in nipple, and it looks to me like it won't screw it. WAY too small a diameter. When i compare the threads of the 5/8 nipple and the 3/4; they appear to be the same. Coarse thread and same count per inch. So in theory if the white mark isn't where the 3/4 in hose goes. Where else could it go?

yes, i just bought a brand new pvc and its on the other valve cover. This engine i beleive has almost 100k miles on it from what the owner told me....AFTER the sale, so i could definitely bite on blow by for the piston rings.

I would reroute the fuel line. You should keep it one inch away from the engine, and if you want the glass fuel filter, you need to make 100% sure that it can in no way ever vibrate and smack the engine. Shattered glass on a hot engine makes for a real fun panic stop when you see the flames shoot out from under the hood.

Re: Ah the age old question....What is this for??
yeah, this is just a temp setup while i tuned the carb. but flames shooting out of the engine while going 75 down 80 may look cool for the other drivers, might have the owner thinking FML!

Re: Ah the age old question....What is this for??
It wasn't due to a fuel filter, but I've been that guy doing 75 MPH in BFE Kentucky at 1 in the morning with flames coming out from under my hood.
It sucked. |

Go to the hardare plumbing department and get a reducer for the 3/4 thread to the 5/8 thread.. use teflon tape.

Re: Ah the age old question....What is this for??
Here are some pics of mine, the "lower" heater hose is connected at the side of the water pump, not the top. I did not like the look of the hose coming out the top and looping all the way around, you can buy the fitting at the parts store for this. I can get a better pic for you tonight, but the fitting is pretty long, and has a large hex in the body so you tighten it down well.

Re: Ah the age old question....What is this for??
The "correct" way to hook them up is there are 2 sizes of hose used, 5/8 and 3/4. Water flows from the fitting on the intake manifold through the 5/8 hose into the bottom of the heater core, then up through the core and exits out of the heater core through the 3/4 hose and returns to either the radiator or the water pump via the 3/4' fitting. But it will work either way.

Re: Ah the age old question....What is this for??
I think the reason the inlet is on the bottom of the core is so the water fills the core without having any air in it, where if the water enters from the top its possible that it will just flow thru without being able to stay fully filled. I could be wrong but have been looking for this answer..

6772 owner, thanks for the pic man. that really put it into perspective. and thank you to everyone else for the help. Now if i can just solve the horrible idle under a load issue i'll be set, and ready to drive!

Re: Ah the age old question....What is this for??
I have found that if i block up the wheels and then shift the truck into drive i can adjust the air fuel mix better to smooth out my idle, just be absolutly sure the truck will not move, its safer to have a friend there with a foot on the brake..
