Re: Has anyone successfully done a 2wd to 4wd conversion?

I did it with a 77 crew cab dually about 10 years ago. I always say that I'd never do it again and just get an original one. Now I have a '62 that I bought sight unseen that had been swapped on to a suburban frame. I don't like the job that the P.O. did so I bought an original '63 K15 that I am much happier with.
I guess if you have the time, space, intestinal fortitude and understanding wife that I had back then, I would say go for it. I do remember being really proud that I had built that truck myself and it was a pretty awesome truck.
If you have the donor truck, take lots of pictures of how things attach along with lots of measurements. They will come in handy when you do the swap. I also remember steam cleaning all the parts and my truck really well which made the job way cleaner. Have good sharp drill bits for driling brackets and the frame, as well as a good grinder with plenty of metal blades for cutting off rivets. Keep a bunch of grade 8 hardware 1/2" and 9/16" for all the suspension and crossmember attachments on hand too.
Lastly if you do this conversion, take lots of pictures so the next guy will have something to help him out and so guys like me won't even think of doing it again when the itch strikes! Best of luck whichever way you go. You're in the right place to figure it out.
