700R4 For my Sons 64 Teeth Rattler
I have decided to upgrade my Sons Truck to an overdrive tranny. I picked up an 89 700R4 out of a Camero. We are going to be installing it over the next couple of weeks. I hope this helps out the R's at Highway Speeds because right now this thing reving way to much. I put a 2004R in my Oldest Sons Truck and it is way better to drive on the Highway. Anyway I will post some pictures over the next couple of weeks if anyone is interested in the process.

Re: 700R4 For my Sons 64 Teeth Rattler
I'm running a 350/700r4 combo, and I can tell you it keeps the revs pretty low even at 70 mph.

Re: 700R4 For my Sons 64 Teeth Rattler
3:73 gears and a 700R4 here, I run about 2200 rpms at 75 mph and still have bottom-end. You'll like it. Funny thing is I ran the TH350 for years as a daily driver and it never bothered me until I started driving it only occasionally.
Here's a tip, for the coverter use an 88-up S10, 4.3L. They stall around 2200-2500 rpm and can be had reman. for about $100. Nice little kick for cheap.

700r4/350
Did the 350/700R4 in my 60 GMC, has the Dana 44. I don't know what the rear end ratio is , but this thing comes out of the hole just screamin. The first two gears in the 700r4 are quite low, so it really gives you something in the low range. I can just hammer the throttle and break the back tires loose any time in the first two. The next shift is a bigger jump and the last with the lock up of the converter gives you comfortable cruising. Not a difficult swap either. You can make your own crossmember easily.

Re: 700R4 For my Sons 64 Teeth Rattler
Sorry it took so long but my Son got asked to a Dance by a hottie and he wants to be able to drive his truck so he can impress the hottie. So we put decided to leave the TH400 in there until next weekend after the dance. My Oldest Son and myself wired the tranny with a Painless 60109 700R4 wiring harness internally. Now we are waiting to wire the rest of it till My Son is done impressing the girls. I have also been passing a rather painfull Kidney Stone the last week so I really didn't feel like messing with it anyway. I am going to post a few pictures of the wiring internal to the tranny.
You start out with a freshly painted 700R4. After draining the pan remove it. This is a pictures of the original wiring on the internals of the tranny. The connector to the aft of the tranny is the 4th gear pressure switch and the one to the front of the tranny is the Fourth Gear Selenoid. Remove the Fourth Gear Selenoid and install the new one that comes with the Painless Wire Harness kit number 60109. Take out the fourth gear pressure switch and replace it with the one in the kit. Re: 700R4 For my Sons 64 Teeth Rattler
Make sure you have your Tool Retriever handy. Dress up the wiring and make sure its all tucked in and pluged in properly. Make sure you put in your old or I would recommend putting in a new filter while you have the pan off. Install your pan with the new gasket that is part of the Painless kit. I will be posting more pictures week after next of how we install the 700R4 into my Sons 64 Shortwide. JRBECK64 |

Re: 700R4 For my Sons 64 Teeth Rattler
Thanks-- this is good stuff to Know . . The 700R4 is all new to me..but I think it is the next project.
How much was the harness and solenoid kit?? Is that all the modifications needed? What is the plan for shift linkage?? is it floor or column shift?

The kit cost $173 through Summit Racing. There is a wiring harness that plugs into the four pin connector on the outside of the 700R4. The rest of the kit includes a Brake Switch that replaces the stock brake switch in the brake pedal linkage. It allows for another terminal that connects to the 4th Gear Selenoid that disconnects the Lock Up in the Torque Convertor. There is also a Vacuum Switch that hooks up to the Carb. I will post all the installation pictures as we are doing all the changes. That will be the week after next before I get them posted. Hope this helps. JRBECK64 |

I have a slip joint Driveshaft in my sons 64 and the only problem is I need to find a yoke that will bolt to the front of the shaft that will slip into the back of the 700R4. The tail of the 700R4 sets exactly the same as the TH400 thats in it right now so as far as shortening it I dont need to. I do have to move the Crossmember that the tranny sets on because the mount on the 700R4 is farther forward than the one on the TH400. Hope that makes sense. JRBECK64 |

Re: 700R4 For my Sons 64 Teeth Rattler
You will need a 27 spline yoke, which is probably the most common spline used by GM. Measure the cup diameter and span on the TH400 yoke to identify the U-joint and then head for your friendly local salvage yard.

Them 383's are bad A__ engines. Are you beefing up your 700R4 before you put that in behind the 383? Ive heard they can be a little on the weak side if you dont get them built. My Sons, engine is a 69 327 and its probably putting out about 300HP so its not going to be a huge strain on the 700R4 we are putting in but I bet that 383 will be pushing 400HP so you might want to do some research on how to beef it up a bit. I am thinking my 383 should have around 400horse and 400 or so pounds of torque. I have world product heads on it that have been worked on and an intake that was ported to match. I did not go crazy with the cam or compression as I want it to be street friendly and run on pump gas. I am shooting for november (off for ten days) to do the swap. right now I have a 12 bolt open diff with 3.73 gearing but I have a 12 bolt limited slip 3.08 gears lined up to get. anyways, I am looking forward to seeing what goes into putting a 700R4 in our trucks. Seems like the crossmember would have to be moved back a little and driveline shortened. |
