Help Identifying rear end pumpkin - The 1947 - Present Chevrolet & GMC Truck Message Board Network

My friend Justin has a '60 chevy 1/2 ton and recently changed the I-6 to a 302 V-8. He would like to change the rearend gears from the stock 3.90 (he believes) to something better 3.07 or 3.23 IF he has the Dana 44.

He sent me these pictures but this pumpkin does not look like the Dana 44 I have with my 60 gmc.

Can any of you more knowledgable folks figure out what his pumpkin is so we can pick a set of gears?

looks like an eaton rear end best your gonna get probably is 4.11 i thought. maybe other ratios were available

This rearend came wih the truck, did a bit of reasarch and it hard to find a decent picture or gear breakdown. I tried Precisiongear.com and they don't list any eaton. From what I've found they seem to be popular with fords?

He has the gears for 3.90 right now, so he trying to do what I did by gear lower so he drive a little easier at highway speeds.

Now that we know what it is called, we hope to find something out, (stupid questions time) was eaton a popular rearend for the '60 model chevy's?

Any help you can through on this would be great.

i believe on this website if u look at the section "from 1966 dealer book" you will see H-024 and H-29 i believe those would be the eatons for the half tons. the 3/4 and 1 tons are H-052 H-072 and H-110 so im guessing the H designates the eatons. i know thats for 66 but those axles i believe changes very little over the years(may explain why 3.90 not listed for 66).

C clip axles, thats why the rear cover is removable.

Yukon Gear makes 3.38 gears for those. They refer to them as a 55T differential. Those differentials were used from 1955 thru 1962, and 3.90 was probably the most common gear.

Yeah - that one's not an Eaton. The "Eaton" has two bolts close together at the 9 o'clock and 3 o'clock.
