weird knocking noise
Hey all.... I have a weird knocking and was wondering if anyone had some insight.... maybe knock is a bad word.... something in the drivetrain/wheels.... when I am in neutral at 10 mph down to zero.... I can feel it in the steering, but if I put it in gear.... it stops.... very strange.... I can feel it on the floorboard too... Anyone have any thoughts on where to start checking?

Front wheel bearings? (seen this one before..I know it sounds strainge)
U joints are not likely to be it, your description is bass ackwards for U-joints. (that was the first thing I thought of) |

Yea... It thought u-joints too... but here is a little history... I had the inline 6 with 3 on the tree.... It made the noise that I described, but really bad (because obviously, I spent more time in neutral)... well I put in that Olds 455 with a TH400 tranny.... so, since it's an auto, it's always in gear..... When I did the swap, I put in new ujoints..... It does sound/feel like bearings, but it doesn't do it while in gear.... or I should say, when there is resistance on the drivetrain.... very strange......

What kind of transmission, If it is a manual there may be a broken tooth. Ive seen a number of amnual trannies with a broken tooth that make a steady knocking sound.

I had a 3 speed manual... then when I did my engine swap.. I put a TH400 in it... noise didn't change at all..... just was less obvious because of the auto.....

rear wheel bearing inner probably. maybe gear set problem.
