Sounds like a plan.
After the frame is stripped things will be a lot clearer.
Unless the truck has been in a wreck or if there is evidence of frame damage the frame table will not be an issue.
If there is evidence of damage I would look elsewhere.
The frames on these trucks are pretty tough.

Buy a 71 or72 short rolling chassis and build it up from there.
The early model frames may not have the dent in the frame for the power steering and the crossmember won't have the brake line brackets besides you will want disc's up front anyway.

Get it the way you want it and then make the sheet metal swap.
