Bear Claw Latches for 1948 GMC?

Which size bear claw latches fit the best in the doors for a 1948 GMC pickup? I'm looking to do this on my project but I do not want to spend the money for a specific kit for this project. Looks like to me the Altman or Bear Claw kit for this truck would be over $300.00. The universal Bear Claw kits are arround $100.00. What has been you experience? Thanks.

We use the double jaw bear claw latch on our customer trucks we build in our shop. They work perfect and close like a new door once done.We have
the complete kits in our shop to sell and ship out same day.Ours are not a
direct bolt in they are a weld on.I can sell this kit to all members for
$90.00 complete this comes with the inst panels you weld in to the door jambs.

So far the ones from Trique Manufacturing are hard to beat, except for the cost, but install is straight forward and fit just right!

We offer The rotary latch system with installation kit as well for the same if not better price. But to be honest for the little bit more $ I would go with the bear claws IMO

In your picture you are showing it looks like the bearclaw is a single jaw not
a double jaw.I always use a double jaw for the safety of the door not popping
open.

The bolt in is a easy install,to be honest the weld in bearclaw is a much cleaner look and the time frame to do a install does not take that long either

I agree with Justin. I've had both single and doubles and prefer the doubles. After install, I used a weld in kit, the doors shut firmly with a very positive lock. (I have a little play because I have old nasty rubber seals but with fresh/newer seals it will be even tighter) I just wish I had known about the discount as I clearly over paid for mine through Autoloc!

Re: Bear Claw Latches for 1948 GMC?

I opted for the custom route...

88 YJ half door bear claws with the pins, and a little custom sheet metal work... then used 35 lb door poppers and shaved the handles.

Total cost (not including the $100 remote poppers) = $20.

Cheers!
Ted.

OK, I hate to appear to be a "dumb a**", but what is a YJ. I looked through your build thread hoping I would find something but could not find anything. I am impressed with the $20 for the YJ bear claws and also your wiper build.

Re: Bear Claw Latches for 1948 GMC?

No worries... YJ... as in Jeep YJ. I got the idea while helping my daughter rebuild hers. When we stripped the door down to repaint them... I looked at them and said to myself that they look like they might work well. I did have to mod them a little bit to get them to actuate just right and having a small machine shop at my disposal certainly helped.

I suppose I need to get off my ass and add to my build thread... I haven't updated it in awhile!

Cheers,
Ted.
