Refinishing Console
My other console developed another crack where the door stop is. I am contemplating whether to attempt to fix it again or use my spare. Should I strip off the factory applied blue paint or paint over it? I painted over some blue seat belts that I bought off Evil Bay and they turned out pretty good. Sorry about the crappy cell phone pic. The tub is the only place big enough where I can clean off in the interior plastic parts. It still looks dirty but, this is after the 1st clean with warm sopy water and degreaser.............

Re: Refinishing Console
After you get it clean, you should use a scotchbrite scuff pad and scuf up the entire area you're wanting to paint until it has a dull finish. No shiny places. Then clean off the dust then paint.
This should be fine as long as there's no paint flaking on the old paint Posted via Mobile Device

Re: Refinishing Console
I recently cleaned up an old console with the usual soap, water, and 409. Once clean I hit it with some SEM coat black. Not perfect but I'm pleased with how it turned out.

Re: Refinishing Console
I've only done one console, but it was one like that one. I cleaned it with a mixture of soap and water and bleach with the trim and emblem removed like you have. I used 000 steel wool to clean up the chrome trim ring. It looked fantastic after a repaint and still looked just as good 8 years later when I sold the truck.
You're on the right track, you'll love it when you are done. |

Re: Refinishing Console
I stripped mine with "Rustoleum Air Craft Stripper" in a rattle can, got it at Walmart. Ironically, my console was blue just like yours. Haven't painted mine yet. Here are some links I have subscribed to in ref. to console restoration:
