Do i need..............

Do i need to use a puller to get my steering wheel off my 63C10 swb stepside, i removed horn assembly and there is on nut to take off should it just pull off, do i need a puller, is there a secret to taking it off m not awhare of? another i have play in my steering wheel, like 3 inches left in right, would that be the upper bearing or......???? links,threads,how 2's, exeprience .....i dont wanna break anything

Oh yeah. Puller is needed. at least i've always used one. you can usually rent them at Autozone or O'Reilly for a $20 deposit.

the play you are getting is typical. It is more than likely the gear box itself. I'm not sure how tight they were from the factory, my truck only has 87,000 miles and it has the same amount of play.

thanks i thought so i removed all the stuff and it would bundge i just didnt want to hook the puller and destroy something.....these hands dont have much finess.... they are destroyers haha

you can lightly Pull the wheel and with a brass hammer give the thread bolt a few light taps....it should just pop off..dont hit the treads of course,,,just tap the top of the bolt
Its worked for me many times...

is there an adjustment on gearbox or ne thing to eliminate some of the play in the wheel?

One of the really cheap pullers will also work just fine, like this one. It’s inexpensive enough to make it worth having for next time:

Or in a pinch you can make one of your own with a simple chunk of steel strap or an old piece of angle iron.

1. Cut it to the long enough to reach beyond the two threaded holes in the hub.
2. Drill two matching holes in the strap.
3. Install the nut back on the steering shaft, and run it down just far enough so the upper surface of the nut is flush with the top of the shaft. (This prevents damage to the threads).
4. If needed for clearance, place a small socket over the top of the steering shaft nut, under the strap you just made.
5. Using bolts long enough to nearly bottom in the steering hub holes, tighten the strap down evenly on top of the socket, until there is significant tension.

This may be enough to pop the wheel off by itself. If not, whack the back of the steering wheel evenly on both sides with the heels of your hands. This will normally pop the wheel right off. Giving the center of the strap a couple of whacks with a plastic hammer will also work, but never do this on a late model collapsible column, it can collapse the shaft and ruin the column.

you don't need a puller but if you don't mind a few broken teeth or a large bump on your forhead. you can pull it by hand with alot of force and then it will let go and usually your face is in the way. i know from experiance

LOL Grandpa broke the bridge of his nose with this method. If you are going to use the heave ho method at least leave the nut on a couple of threads.

rollinkaos: thanks for the advice broke my nose a couple times in wrestling, def dont wanna have the rods shoved up in my nostrils again and have it reset haha

If you are having rotational play, (i.e. turning the wheel), the problem is not in the steering column. That is play in the steering box. If you have up and down or left to right movement (not turning the wheel), then it's likely your upper bearing in the column. Make sure you are working on the right part to solve the right problem.
