72 blazer 4x4 350 oil pan removal ?
Has anyone cut the bottom out of the moter mount cradle to ease removal of the oil pan.My rear pan seal is leaking and it appears that this would be an easy option by cutting it just below the lower frame mount bolts and then fabbing it so it can be bolted back on, for easy removal if there is a next time.If you have done this please post pics,Or mabe it's a bad idea.

That sounds like a lot of work just to be able to drop the pan every couple of years. Just unbolt you engine mounts, jack up the engine until the exhaust manifolds touch the firewall and drop the pan. To make it even easier, you can "massage" the oil pan to clear the crossmember a bit more so it takes less engine lift to get it off.

Yup, easier to pull the engine IMO.

Not exactly easy but you can also unbolt the motor from the crossmember, loosen the transfer case mount bolts, lift the motor and then unbolt and physically remove the engine crossmember. Not easy but I've done it when I needed to modify that crossmember.

That's how I've done mine a couple times. If I remember right the cross member comes off in four pieces and all just bolts in. I just hung the motor from a cherry picker took the mounts loose, and unbolted the cross member pieces, wasn't any problem at all.

Cut it without jacking up motor ,worked real slick already had a holes drilled on upper side on both sides just had to cut 2" wide pieces of 3/16" plate plate and drill 2 holes works great looks great took 45 minutes.

I wonder what the factory didnt do it that way, could be they thought it would decrease the crossmembers ability to handle load and cause a weak point in the frame. those rubber engine mounts will not do a thing to stop the frame rails from coming in twards the center in a wreck or even over time with the weight. just a thought. |

easiest solution to the problem is to install a DIY4X4 cross member, unbolt the center section of their cross member and you have complete access to drop the pan

Thats the way my modified original is now except i left the motor mount part in,i don't have to jack up the engine at all to remove pan the motor stays bolted in the whole time...
