Engine Change

Will a 1954 235 Chevy Truck engine bolt up in a 1947 Thriftmaster Chevy Truck which has a 216? I have a friend who has a newly rebuilt 235 I can get very reasonable. Thanks!

Yes it will, Yo need to use the bell housing from the 54 and you may need a short water pump. The standard 235 pumps are to long for the radiator.

It is a total bolt-in as long as the engine is no newer than 54. The water pump didn't change until 55. You must use the 47 bellhousing because the transmission bolt pattern is different on 48-up.

Somewhat related question....I have a 1961 Apache with a 235 and Four speed tranny...Whats a reasonable price to ask for them both? It runs but knocks after getting her up to 40 Mph...Want to fund my 327 rebuild. Thanks

The SM420 will bring about $100 on a good day. There are a lot of them around because they seem to last almost forever.

Most people in the market for a 235 will want a running engine they can just drop in to keep a beater on the road. One with a knock is no more than a core, and might have value only to someone needing small parts that aren't reproduced anymore. It's not hard to find people giving away dead 235s, so if you can get $25 consider yourself lucky. One possibility that might boost the price would be if you could find someone who needs a date-correct engine for a stock resto.

the sm-420 without bellhousing will bring $150 on craigslist around here if the search term "rock crawler" in the title.
they stick them in toyotas. the sm420 is the shortest lowest geared tranny they use

I just paid $150 for a not running 235 complete w/3 speed and an extra 4 spd and $200 for a running 235 w/ 3 spd. If the head is good it will sell for $100 by itself a good exhaust manifold is about $125. The parts are more valuable than a complete motor. Parted you could get $350 out of it.

I tried to sell my 58 235 for 10 years, complete long block with accessories, and ended up selling it for scrap a couple of years ago when the prices were high. Around here they are for sale all the time for a couple of hundred bucks on CL, but I do not know if they are selling. If you want a six you can get a later model 292 for probably the same money.

Maybe someone can give me some hints about installing a 327 into my 61' replacing the orig. 235. Motor mounts will probably be the primary concern, easy or a pain to install? FYI gonna have a pro do the actual install just want to save some time and $ if I can..

Any info would be greatly appreciated....

I'd have to agree with Dwcsr in that the head is worth as much or more than the complete engine. Around here a core 335 head with no cracks and no damage will probably bring 100 or more as a core at the cylinder head shops. Price on complete engines or short blocks usually depends on condition.

I'd post this in the 60-66 forum, I'm sure someone there has done it.
