How to bleed a 4 ton floor jack? - The 1947 - Present Chevrolet & GMC Truck Message Board Network

As the title says I need help bleeding my floor jack. My floor jack is finally loosing its lift, I have not found any puddles of hydralic fluid though. And before anyone says it -YES I DO USE JACK STANDS ALWAYS!!! My dads boss was killed many years ago from a car falling on him so I know how important they are.
The jack goes back down even when there is no load on it so I'm guessing that I need to bled and perhaps replace the fluid. I've had this jack close to 15 years, I purchased it from a place called APCO and it has always been very reliable. The fill location is on top and I'm waiting till monday to get the proper hydralic oil for it but for now does anyone know the proceedure for bleeding it?

sounds like either the valve is leaking or the piston packing is bad. either way the jack will probably need to be resealed.

no apparent places where it has leaked, but I know there is a way to bleed the cylinder, that is what i need to know how its done.

You should be able to see a fill plug on it and fill it "Usually" until it is even with the hole.Pumping it up and letting it down a few times usually bleeds one.crushermechanic does have a point.A jack does not need to be leaking externally to leak past the seals internally.

always just filled to the hole,pumped up with a load a few times then topped off after those few cycles

have also had no sign of leak and the jack slowly lost jaking ability being 20years old i just replaced the jack that time

Just because its not leaking to the outside doesnt mean its not leaking internally causing the pressure loss allowing the cylinder to bleed down. Your jack is worn out time for a replacement before something bad happens
