Removing Oxygen sensor- 87 Chevy

Are there any tricks to removing an oxygen sensor from a 1987 Chevy truck? It has the original sensor in it and I have a replacement from NAPA that I'm ready to install. Thanks.

Make sure it's hot and you've put some pb blaster on it or something. You'll probably never get it out cold, at least not in one piece.

Oil, Oil, Oil, Heat, Heat, Heat! Doesnt have to be in that order, but both are good. Get the engine good and hot and wear some good gloves and you should be able to get it out. Like RandyP said, you will probably not get it out while it is cold.

Cut off the pig tail and use a six point socket or wrench.

Re: Removing Oxygen sensor- 87 Chevy

i found that if you have the time you should PB Blast it the night before then start with warming the truck up and more oil then heat etc and you can use Bog Port Jimmys idea of the six point socket and the other advice about anti sieze also works

Re: Removing Oxygen sensor- 87 Chevy

slip the closed end of a 7/8th wrench over it and kick it. If it gives you trouble, knock the top of the sensor so its only the nut part in the pipe and hit it with a 7/8th 6 point socket in a impact. I actually have had worse luch with the stuff being hot. I would wait till its cold.

Re: Removing Oxygen sensor- 87 Chevy UPDATE

Spudz was right. I was able to remove it cold. 7/8 wrench took care of it. Thanks to all for all the sage advice, Oh, I was sure to put plenty of anti-seize on the threads of the new sensor.
