GM 73-97 Class Action Suit

Does anyone know what become of this. This delt with the side mounted fuel tank. I use to get letters on it and a couple vouchers toward a new purchase. Just curious.

Re: GM 73-97 Class Action Suit

I got two of those letters. Might still have them, don't know.

Basically GM was offering squarebody owners a voucher for XXXX dollars towards the purchase of a new truck. Might have only been a grand or $1500 at the most. New only, I tried to talk them into a deal on a used 454 SS and the sales guy about laughed me out of the showroom.

I think the payments on my '87 (bought used) were about $175 a month. At 10 or 12% APR the new truck was gonna be over $600 a month for 60 months.

The voucher didn't even make a dent in the price. Back then the local Chevy dealer was selling every new truck they could get their hands on for full sticker or more and they weren't inclined to deal even a penny.

Re: GM 73-97 Class Action Suit

All of this was thanks to NBC news rigging trucks on their program "Dateline NBC" to blow up on demand.

I have a few more things to say about NBC but I'd better keep my fingers to my self.

I used the $1000 voucher I had to buy a Sierra in 04 a few weeks before it expired.

Re: GM 73-97 Class Action Suit

I got one of those letters, I declined to be involved, because of the BS fake NBC "footage" I felt there was nothing wrong with the design considering the millions of trucks and the couple of "incidents" and besides at the time I had a '75 Pro-Street step-side with the fuel tank in the bed.....

Re: GM 73-97 Class Action Suit

There is a guy from my wife's tiny home town that was t-boned in his square before the suit settled and the fuel tank exploded. He lost a hand and suffered pretty bad burns......needless to say he got a HUGE (7 figures) settlement from GM. He now has several barns full of probably 75 high dollar muscle cars/trucks (ironically, almost all GM). Still farms and runs the local restaurant in town though!

Re: GM 73-97 Class Action Suit

what I had heard was about them exploding but then we got letters too, and it was towards a new tank, said the welds around the sending unit were insufficient and you bring it in and they'd fix it or get you a new tank.

I tried to get a GA personalized tag for my '87 that read either FRBMB (firebomb) or FLRMDL (flare model).

Both were declined by the DMV.

Those tags may have been issued to a couple Pinto owners.

Re: GM 73-97 Class Action Suit

i remember Dateline NBC doing a story on that like in 1990 or 91.
I thought the whole thing was a crock of **it.
They were treating it like if it was a Ford Pinto
