Hard starting

I have a '77 with a 454 when it's cold it starts fine, however then the engine is up to operating temp.it cranks to slow to start.I've replaced starter with same results, the timing is spot on. If there is something wrong with the distributor (vacum advance? ) do I have to replace with big block dist. or can I use small block dist.
