1960 Burb windshield install

Hi guys,

Wondering if anybody has done their own windshield install. I am about ready to reinstall a new windshield since the paint is supposed to be done around the windshield area (hopefully) tomorrow. Have a new windshield and gasket. My friends feels that we can do the install using a 1/4-inch rope technique. AND..that the chrome strip should be an easy re-install too.

I am kinda leery about it. Anybody done the rope/self install on theirs ?
It would cost about $140.00 to have a glass company install it and I could use that money towards new rear windows if I could save it.

What do you all think about it ?

Tx Firefighter had an entry in his build thread about doing his own. I’ve done about a dozen various windshields in my lifetime, but my 1960 GMC was the first failure. I tried to reinstall my original windshield with several large chips in it, and ultimately cracked it. The problem I could never resolve was getting the windshield fully seated near the pinch weld to get started.

If the glass was rested on the lower pinch weld, the upper edge of the gasket interfered with the roof lip and could not be laid back against the opening. If the entire windshield was rested against the opening, the bottom of the gasket was too far away to get the inner edge started over the pinch weld. The glass shop ultimately sent 3 guys to get mine installed.

Others have had different experiences, but I wouldn’t attempt putting one in a 60-63 again.

Over the years I have had mine out twice and re-installed it each time sucessfully. I used a real strong kite style string if I recall correctly.
Let us know how you make out.

I am planning on pulling mine out once more in the Spring to install a new gasket and trim. I understand the trim goes onto the gasket first and then the complete assembly goes into the opening.
