Either one of the last two suggestions are a good way to go, depending on the old budget. If you are buying an engine and you have a pre-86 drivetrain, make sure you stay with that. 1986 was the break point where GM switched to a one piece rear main seal with a small diameter bolt pattern on the crank. Pre 85 was the 2 piece seal with a larger diameter.

That price is just for a machined block and heads and pistons/etc. No external accessories, no valve covers/oil pan/timing cover/etc, and no install.
Going to take a look at it today or tomorrow. |

Well, it was gone by the time I got there. They said they could re-build mine for about 800 if I pulled it and brought it in. <sigh> This is frustrating, I can't afford that.
Could I pull the pistons and put new rings on without pulling the engine? |
