wrecked 68 - front end mod question
My son wrecked his 68 GMC PU and smashed in the grille and shoved the rad and rad support into the fan. I can find rad support cores for 67-68 chevy's but none for gmc. Can I drop in one of these and maybe change the grille to accomodate a single headlight system, or mod the chevy core to accept a double headlight sys? Gotta do it on a tight budget and could use some good info.

Re: wrecked 68 - front end mod question
I talked with a guy at a salvage yard and he said you can't swap the chevy for a gmc cuz of the headlight buckets. would I have to cut out for the 2nd headlight or mod it some other way to make it work, or would it be better to convert to single headlights?

Re: wrecked 68 - front end mod question
from what i gather you can get a chevy support and weld the headlight bucket assemblies from your gmc support to it and it will work.

Re: wrecked 68 - front end mod question
I'll post pics tomorrow. but from the link posted by lockdoc, I should be able to use either a chevy or gmc core support, would just have to either convert to single headlight, or weld on the old ones. Could they be bolted on? Don't have a welder yet.

Re: wrecked 68 - front end mod question
You can use the 67/68 chevy core support and either use a 67/68 chevy grill, grill support and hood latch.. or just attach your GMC headlight buckets to the the 67/68 chevy core support
68 Chevy and GMC fenders and hoods are the same. 67/68 GMC core supports are actually 67/68 Chevys with GMC headlight buckets spot welded on.. (if you look on the GMC core support under outer headlight you will see that is has the square holes for the headlight adjuster screws and spring on the core support) |

Re: wrecked 68 - front end mod question
awesome. sounds like I could just pick up a 67-68 chevy core, and just attach the headlight buckets and it'd work out. Thanks to all for your info and advice. Guy at the yard has one for 100 bucks. I'll probably pick it up this weekend. Now, to find a hood!

Re: wrecked 68 - front end mod question
I want to sell complete. Either call or pm. You might be able to find something local to you, I am in dallas, so counting fuel costs,,,, might not be cost effective for ya. I know there is quite a few members in the OKC area, somebody has to have a line on some parts.

Re: wrecked 68 - front end mod question
Well I picked up a grille and headlight trim at the yard Saturday when I couldn't find the support. I should be able to still use it with the Chevy support core, right?

Grille is for a 68 gmc. Sorry, forgot to add that little detail.

Re: wrecked 68 - front end mod question
As long and you attach your old GMC headlight bucket stanchions to the chevy core support it will work..

Re: wrecked 68 - front end mod question
Here's the wreck pics. Had the bumper off and finished sanding and priming the hood. Icy patch + ditch = $$ and lots of tylenol. Impact drove the rad into the fan blade and buckled the bottom of the support core. Can't wait to get started on it!

Re: wrecked 68 - front end mod question
Yeah, it caved on the bottom below the fan. So far, the best price I've got to replace the rad is about $260. Beside the hood, that's the most expensive thing to replace.
