Tailgate band refurb.

Hey guys, newbie here.
I have an 85 swb - what is the best way to clean up the brushed aluminum band across the tailgate? It is in good shape, just kind of dull.

Thanks for any responses!

Re: Tailgate band refurb.

I am thinking something like the 3M headlight restoration kit because it has sanding pads and a polish of course it isn't made for this but I think it might work

Well, I was thinking of having it power coated in a nice light grey. My concern is that I like the original shine. I'm at lost what to do myself.

Re: Tailgate band refurb.

I could be wrong but i think the bands are anodized. This is why they are a little difficult to restore the finish on.

Not sure what the right answer is but use the search because I know it's been discussed before. Good luck.

Re: Tailgate band refurb.

Oven cleaner will remove the annodizing then you could just polish up the bare aluminum but you are going to have to keep after it repolishing it a lot

Re: Tailgate band refurb.

I really want to debadge the "Chevrolet" logo and have a blank slate, THEN shine. But it will have holes right?

Re: Tailgate band refurb.

Here is an old thread on restoring the tailgate bands. Seems to be very simple.

Yes, that's what I wanted to do....my "Chevrolet" emblem is in bad shape....the second "E" is basically bent into the "H"..I'd like to take it off and just have the plain band but I have to fix a dent and shine so I don't know it it would work very well....
