From the look of that crossmember I'm not sure if I agree with the one piece design. When I installed my double hump and tightened the diagonal braces you would need a sledge hammer to get it in or out, hence the bolt on braces. I'm curious to hear some install feedback Look great for the exhaust clearance!

New design
Air Male I re designed the x-member to have bolt on braces for the frame mounting. I also left a total of 1/4 inch clearance (apprx.1/8 or so) on each side of the x-member. I also made it apprx 1/8 inch shorter than the measurement inside the frame so it would not be so hard to install. I checked the clearance on 4 different truck frames before I decided on that amount. I also had the brackets that bolt to the frame and to the x-member made with a slotted holes just in case of different hole positions. I did alot of research while building these to insure that they would be universal between the different types of tranny's we put in our trucks. If you look at the pic gchemist put on here you can see all the components of the x-member. I will be getting some good clear pictures of a completed one up soon.
Bobby

Makes sense to me. Who is gonna be the first with an installed pic? Let's not leave these things on the workbench forever (gchemist-boataddict)

What years are these for? I have an '85 1/2 ton 4x4 that has a bent tranny mount. It looks like the guy who owned it before me ran over a tree stump or something. I can't find on in any junk yard around here. It also looks tacky under my lifted truck, since it leans forward. How much does it run?

Do these "custom" tranny crossmembers, actually not hang as low as the factory ones? I'm thinking that if I went with this custom one, I might be able to gain more ground clearance.

chargestang89 the x-member will fit from 73-87 trucks. It should be easy to install if you have a lift on your truck, I have not been able to find a 4x4 that I could look at to see if the mounts are different. (ie tranfer case mounting) total cost with shipping is $60.
TIMSPEED yes these mounts bolt up exactly where the original x-member did. they do provide some more clearance, the best thing is that the exhaust can be tucked up inside the frame to gain more clearance there.

Hey Bob,
How much HP have you put on your original design? Just curious. The way my truck shifts at 3/4+ throttle, I sure do need all the support possible. |

gchemist The engine in my truck is a 350 w/350 hp, Right now I have it out putting a new cam in to get a little more hp. My x-member is just like the very first one I offered ( single frame mount) It held up with no problem, and I have had some heavy loads on back and realy got on it at times. It is in the same shape as when it was installed. I don't see a problem with it holding up under heavy loads or hard shifts.

That appears to be a great looking mount. My question is why hasn't anybody just cut 2 standard mounts in half and welded the pieces with the exhaust hump together and thrown away the other pieces. I did this on a previous truck and it worked great. I will be doing this to my current truck and will post pics when completed.
