hei or pertronix
I am getting close to firing th b.b. I don't have a hei dizzy, but do have a point's dizzy. Should I go pertronix or hei? Anyone have suggestion's .

Even though HEI does have a few problems, i would run it (with a few new parts if the fundage allows) for the simple reason you can go into any parts store anywhere and get a new module.
Mail order parts suck when your stranded on the side of the road. |

I was pretty impressed with the Pertronix ignitor ,after runninig it in the kids sb chev powered ranger. Long story short, the curve was about right on, & after the ranger was "history" the old dist wound up in my longhorn. Those old points dist have more mechanical advance than the HEI's do. My setup is a flying magnet unit, with the matching coil. The curve runs 10 initial, with a 34 total + 16 vac advance.......that sounds like a bunch, but that old longhhorn has low gears,& a close ratio box, & dont rattle!. The d@mn thing runs like stink!Today was the 1st test run, with 1 elct fan going. She held temp @ 190 , but the fan ran like crazy in traffic.....rolling , the fan didnt need to run! The HEI is a good unit, but if you go that route, spend the bucks for a rebuilt, Then add the curve & coil ,ect that you need. Good luck,crazyL

Thank's for the info guy's.... Crazy-L what is a flying set-up compared to a regular pertronix? Or is that a regular pertronix????

Ive been run my pertronix for over a year without a single glitch.
I have the matching pertronix wires too. I have had them off many times when doing work on my truck and they come off, and then snap back on time and time again. Great wires.

My plan: Pertronix in the distributor, points in the glove box just in case.

The flying magnet is a magnetic ring that bolts on below the rotor(underside of the advance mechanism). The unit triggers off the magnetic ring vs off the old points cam on the lobe sensor style. Its a little more work to set up, as far as setting clearances , but IMO a much better unit(faster starts, & better responce). i have run both styles, & wasnt really impressed with the lobe sensor unit. my setup runs on full battery voltage, & has a matching coil. the only downside is as Longhornmail stated.....you cant get the unit at just any parts house , in the event that you break down on the road. I think the unit was around $65 at a local speed shop.........might not hurt to have a spare to carry for those long road trips. The unit ran for better than a yr in the kids ranger, & hasnt caused any trouble tho. Good luck,crazyL
