New Guy: 65 long bed worth

Hello,

I'm looking at a 65 long bed for sale. I have a '57 chevrolet car with a 235 6 cylinder but I've never owned or messed with any trucks, especially ones from the 60's.

This truck has a non running 6 cylinder with a 3 on the column. Assuming I could get the engine running and it's not blown, what is this truck worth? I haven't looked at it, so naturally there's room for information not known, but assuming everything else is OK.

I don't know anything about these trucks so any information would be helpful. What to look for, what to be careful of, rust areas that are big trouble and what it's worth.

Thanks,
brandon

Since it is not running, I would say around $500.

Look for rust. In almost EVERY case there will be rust in the lowest part of the front fenders behind the wheel well, so don't be too discouraged if you see it there. Other common places of greater concern are door bottoms, rockers, cab corners, floors, roof edges, to name a few spots.
Especially since you are new to these trucks, I would think it is important to get a totally complete truck, with no missing parts. Parts are available everywhere, whether used, new aftermarket, or NOS, but it helps to know what your looking for. Also, Chevy made a bazillion trucks in the sixties, so be patient. You don't need to buy the first one you see, unless it happens to be the right one...and if it is, jump on it!
Good luck!

Cool. Thanks for the response guys. From what I've read (which may be wrong) these trucks came with a 250 or 292 (if I remember correctly). Is there an easy way to tell which one it is.

Thanks,
Brandon

they could come with a 230/250/292/283 and 3spd/4spd/2spauto/TH400 also I think.

It isnt real easy to distinguish the I6 motors, unless you have the motor number.

The 230/250 I6's had the motor mounts directly across from each other. The 292 had the passenger side motor mount farther forward. As for Id'ing a 230 from a 250, I think you would have to have the suffix code from the block.
