Would a stock 78 C10 pass Cali smog emissions?

Looking at selling my 78 and just have questions if it would pass the smog emissions in Cali.

Re: Would a stock 78 C10 pass Cali smog emissions?

Was it from cal?
If it is not they will still make you have every thing stock that it came with ie. cats, air pump, egr, air cleaner.

Even then you wont know until you take it to be tested. This year the great state of california cut the limits in half!!! Two years ago the max for my truck was 950ppm and this year it was 500ppm and my truck was 495ppm!!!! Next time it will probley fail and my truck runs good its there way to force the old rides off the road!

Re: Would a stock 78 C10 pass Cali smog emissions?

My 78 C-10 is a basically stock CA truck. The only mod is to the exhaust system which has two cats instead of one, so I could run true duals. In over 30 years, it has passed visually. Running on seven cylinders, I passed with flying colors this past December.

Different states equipped the trucks emissions equipment different. It will need a smog pump for sure. I don't remember if 78 or 79 needed to have cats. You also need to remember that each county in CA has different standards.

78 and 79 do require cats in california. Each county does have different standards on when you have to smog and not. Great bankrupt state of CA.

You fellas on the west coast sure put up with some hell to live out there.

Smogging 30 year old trucks...What a scam. All they want is you to give up and buy something newer to save the hassle.

Re: Would a stock 78 C10 pass Cali smog emissions?

My 78 straight 6 passed with flying colors....It had the head replaced at some point, and a 2year old cat. You need EGR, a smog pump and a cat, and it has to look like all the OG smog crap is still there.
I agree smog check is a scam. It was supposed to be a rolling 20 year old exemption...so this year a '91 wouldn't have to smog, but the smog nazis canned that rule with the governators approval.

They say its so our kids will breath fresh clean air. But what about the crap air that the California government blows at us everyday they can't work together and pass good laws and a budget.

Re: Would a stock 78 C10 pass Cali smog emissions?

I'd expect the air in California to be getting better everyday since they're running manufacturing industry out of the state by droves with the regulations.

I'm not complaining, my state has benefited greatly by businesses relocating out of Cali due to the rules and regs imposed on them.

Re: Would a stock 78 C10 pass Cali smog emissions?

Just have all the stock parts on it and have it tuned up and running good(no dead cylinders). If its an out of state truck they will have you take it to a Referee to verify its all intact and they will pass you.

They will not make you add part that the truck did not come with even if its an out of state truck.

My 68 C-10 I brought in from South Dakota back when you had to smog a 68 and the only thing they checked for was the thermostatic air cleaner and that the truck was running good. I did not have to add an air pump or cats.

Re: Would a stock 78 C10 pass Cali smog emissions?

We've got pretty tuff restrictions here in Texas but after 24years its just a saftey inspection. So bring on the cam, big heads, and ditch the smog.

That may change as EPA (federal version of smog Nazis) may force local air resource boards to institute smog checks on older vehicles. However - in Cali it is completely out of proportion to reality. Very soon we all have to sport a catalytic converter up our posterior opening Never mind that the state is a bottomless financial hole and business's are leaving state in droves due to excessive regulations and taxes.

We do have nice weather and lots of dead fish in marina's

Man you guys have it rough. All we gotta do in washington is buy tabs. No inspections or emissions. My first truck didn't even have working brakes yet and they licensed it.

Here's some leg-wetting additional CA. smog information.

If you have a Big 10 they don't have to have a cat until '78

Re: Would a stock 78 C10 pass Cali smog emissions?

up here in our province Ontario
we stopped the rolling etest
pretty much if it's 87 and newer FI now has to be tested every two years
but we can pay up to a certain amounts to"fix-pass" a car if it dosn't pass on it's own
first is the visual
then the gas cap seal(they will stop if it doesn't)
