Getting ready to start wiring

OK, I'm at the point where I need to mount the new E-Z Wiring Harness Fuse block. I know it will go on the front firewall in the upper left section. Since I've never wired a vehicle before I'l need pleant of pointers.

The kit I have is the E-Z Wiring 21 circuit and Dolphin Gauges.
http://ezwiring.com/wiring_harness.html

18 FUSES 21 CIRCUIT
Radio, Coil, Dome Light, Backup/Cruise, Horn, Cigarette Lighter, Fuel Pump, AC/Heat, Radio, Turn Signal, Horn, ACC, Wiper, Gauges, Hazard, Fan, Power Window, Power Door Locks, Brake, Headlights.

I know I will have a few extra wires that will not be used like power door locks, fuel pump, etc. and expect to have to bundle these and tuck them under the dash. Any ideas along those line would be good to know.

What scares me is that I'd like to learn some proper tech about termination connections and the such. I' have Jolly's information on running relays (which I will do for brighter headlights) and the proper way to use connectors and I've read Alan Horvath's tips (he's got to do it all over again becasue painter really messed him up) . BUT there is nothing quite like trying all this new stuff for yourself.

Anybody who has done this please chime in. I'm the type of person who will read something several times before trying just to make sure I have it right (less screwups that way.)

Thanks
Jake Groby

I would offer some help, but I haven't done mine yet. What I can do is move this thread to the electrical section. Maybe you will receive more answers there. LMK

Re: Getting ready to start wiring

Are you doing a stock rewire or a new updated version? I think the factory routing was strange, but it mite have had to do with the assembly.

Regardless, I would start with the routing of the harness and eliminate anything not being used right off. Just do a section at a time and then figure out your connections.

What are you planning to use for connections? Original style, weather pack, or just crimp style sleeves?

I don't really know how to correctly answer your question. I suppose I have to follow "stock"? ideas?

For me, I thought it was silly that the harness goes to the passenger side for the engine when it's been much easier to run everything out right above the gas pedal. Of course my trucks have HEI and one wire alternators. I also refuse to jump anything off the starter terminal as I find it difficult to access and it can get overheated/melted easily.

Again, my trucks are also all V8. Maybe the sixers are different. If you are restoring, then I would assume you would be using a stock routing path.

I just pulled out a harness I picked up on C/L and started sorting it out. It may go in my 'burb and I'm thinking of using weather packs to do all the connections. It will not be stock!

Re: Getting ready to start wiring

Hey Jake, as long as you have solid connections and use quality terminals and heat shrink, I think you'll be fine. I know some guys prefer to solder wires and never use butt splices and the like and then just heat shrink over the solder joint.

I am sure I'm not just speaking for myself when I say we wouldn't mind seeing some more pictures of that beautiful cab, so take some pics along the way, will ya?

I've set up an album showing all the reassembly process - Enjoy.

Re: Getting ready to start wiring

I agree with Protrash ... as far as the output to engine compartment.

If you remember my the 'rock-a-billy', I actually ran the harness out the grommet, and thru the fender well to help 'hide' the harness, but this is not neccesary.

I recommend running everything to there locations, following cleaner routes than stock, waiting till the end to tie strap. (as you might add something or change your mind)

One step at a time ... it is really easier than it looks !!

Re: Getting ready to start wiring

Break it down into sections, route everything, then terminate only those sections your comfy with the routing and that are secure. This worked best for me, course I am a very simple minded guy, and I can only think of......what were we talking about again?
