Brake Drum specs
Hey guys,
I'm rebuilding my Dana 44 differential & at the same time putting in new brake shoes. I took the drums to O'Reilly's to get them turned, but they said they can't find any info on how thin they can be, so they won't turn them. Do any of you know how thin you can go or know where I could find this info?

With 11" brakes (11" X 2") the max diameter should be 11.060" if memory serves me correctly.
Edit: Just checked mine; they are stamped "Max dia. 11.090" " Your drums should be stamped with the max spec. New drums aren't that expensive by the way. Last edited by blackedoutharley; 03-18-2011 at 04:45 PM. |

New drums for the Dana 44 are hard to find, but it seems like someone here found a part number for them and where to get them. I just don't remember who it was. You might try a search here if you find you need new drums.

I didn't even think of looking on the drum itself, but after closer review, mine are stamped & they say discard diameter 11.06. Unfortunately, O'Reilly's says mine will be out of spec if they turn them, so I bought new ones from them & they are not the same drum. they dont have an offset hub like the stock ones do, so I'm guessing they won't work. LMC lists hubs for 45.00, but I will check out the ones mentioned by Slorio since he's already been through this.

Did they even measure them prior to deciding that they won't be any good?
Take them to a brake shop and have them measured by somebody that knows what they are doing. This is what I mean... they weren't able to look on the drum for the spec? They're supposed to be the pros but they missed this? Last edited by blackedoutharley; 03-21-2011 at 06:50 PM. |

Yes they did, said they measure 11.01 & 11.012. I believe I will find an actual brake shop because I had to argue with the "manager" about which number was the discard one (11.00 or 11.06) the first time. Never hurts to get a second opinion anyway & if it saves me 80 bucks, then it's worth it.

Absolutely!
At 11.010 & .012' that is plenty of meat to turn them provided they aren't gouged or anything. if they are smooth you should be able to turn them taking no more than .020" off. That would put them at near discard and they would need to be replaced at the next brake job but at least you will have time to prepare for that expense. |
