Finally found myself a 4x4, plus extras. :D

Sit back, there's some back story before the photos. :P

For quite awhile I've been trying to talk my brother in law out of the 1968 Chev 4x4 that's sitting neglected in his driveway. His answer was always that he 'has plans' for it, and that it's his 'dream truck'. So I was surprised when he called in May to say that it was mine for $800 bucks. Turns out the 327 in it was froze up and he had lost interest.

I immediately made arrangements to tow it to my house and went to see him on his next day off of work. Once I arrive he tells me that his neighbor has just sold him a 1971 1 ton with a strong running four bolt main 350 in it. He no longer wants to sell the 4x4 and is going to do a motor swap. Needless to say I was rather annoyed by the development.

In the last month and a half his only progress is to give himself a hernia lifting the 327 out of it by hand, convert the 1 ton to HEI...and remove the drivers door. Why the door? No clue.

Fast forward to this past weekend. He calls and tells my wife that he's tapped for cash and needs to get rid of both trucks. The price? Still $800 bucks. Some assembly required. This time I didn't give him any time to change his mind. We were at his place in an hour ready to take them off his hands.

The verdict?
The bodies are in a word...Rusty. But, the '68 looks to be an original 4x4, not a backyard conversion. Though, it was a six banger to start with. I haven't dug into it yet to see if the 4 speed, transfer case or axles are original.

The flat bed has a good TH400, a rust free axillary battery tray, and misc. extras that definitely make it a worthy parts truck.

Ok, thanks for humoring my mental wandering, now on to the photos.
It had a set of white spokes and bald 35s but the fronts wouldn't hold air, so I slapped two wheels and tires off my '67 on it temporarily.

I'll start a build thread once I start digging into the 4x4.

It'll get parted out in time. I'm hoping the cab is in good enough shape that I can fix it for my '72, the windshield frame is rusted through on it.

Blah, photobucket is acting up today. I had to change the way I was hosting the photos. Maybe you can see them now.

nice to see another 68 4WD on the board....

Snap some pics of the driveline and i'll tell you if it's original. Mine has a 327 so yours could have been original too...

Yup, it's a CustomCamper/30, the label is even still on the glovebox, but I don't have any photos of it. It was originally a medium olive green fleetside. I'll get photos of the label tonight.

It turns out the brother in law took the door off because it was literally rusting off it's hinges.

When I decoded the VIN it said it was a six cylinder truck, unfortunately the glovebox door is not original so I don't know what else I can really find out about it's original equipment. I did find out last night that the front axle is equipped with disc brakes. Which explains the proportioning valve I found mounted to the front crossmember.

It was getting dark when I got around to looking them over more and some of the photos didn't turn out. I've attached pics of the front axle, the transfer case, and the only numbers I could find on the tranny. If I should be looking somewhere else for identifying marks, let me know. Thanks

'68 K10 Rust Issues

Well one year later I've started stripping the K10. And it's not pretty, not that I expected it to be.

I'm really not sure what to do about the cab rust. I knew it needed the usual rockers, kick panels, cab corners, etc, but this complicates things a bit. Somehow the glass channels are nearly rustfree and the seam the wiring sits in isn't as bad as I expected. Is it worth trying to tackle or am I better off looking for a new cab? I had planned on swapping over the sheetmetal from my '72 so I could get it back together and running this summer.

Someone did indeed go through a decent amount of trouble upgrading it at some point, thus the brake booster and power steering.

Haha but then my wagon would need a 350 to compensate.
