What's it Worth? 1991 CrewCab SWB 4x4

I don't know if the seller is a member on the Board, but wondering what this truck is worth:

1. to sell for

2. to build for those of you that have built a similar truck

I'm interested in it, but would have to factor in shipping costs to get it across the country.

Thanks!

Specs:

Automatic
120,000 miles (not sure how many miles on the "383")
4x4

The ad says:

"One of a kind crew cad short box frame has been shortened 383 stroker krate motor 4L80E transsmission 205 transfer case manuel locking hubs dual fuel tanks great heat and air conditioning 6 speaker stereo with sub new interior truck is in beautiful condition but i must sell it no trades"

looks nice!
is it me or is the bed higher than the cab?
doesn't look like the body lines, line up.
Its really hard to judge WIW with just 2 outside pics.
I would say $6000-up

could be the frame is twisted from how it's parked... but that's a big difference.

Most likely the body mounts. Or he shimmed the bed up for whatever reason.

Any other opinions on price?

Or maybe on cost to build this truck?

Re: What's it Worth? 1991 CrewCab SWB 4x4

cost to build all depends on what condition of 4x4 crew you can find to start out. If you find a nice truck for @$4500-6000, can you do the work to shorten it? can you paint the new bed to match or do you want to paint the whole truck a different color? A decent paint job will run you $3000+.
Or do you want to start with a beater for $1500-2000 and redo everything?
The price depends a lot on your skill level. If you have to farm everything out you will be over $10K fast!

how much is the guy asking?
you probably won't get much response on the value of this truck with out more info and better pics of everything.
I'd be concerned about the frame splice also. Was it done well? or hacked?
A friend of mine once told me "It's only worth what the buyer and seller can agree upon"
What is it worth to you?

I have plans to build a 4x4 myself. Its going to be low buck and I will do all the work.
I'm not worried about the exterior cause it is going to be my wheeler also, so that will save me a lot of coin.

I'd say that if he can install the 383 and the 4l80 correctly then he probably did the frame work correctly as well - but you still need to check it out carefully.

I would venture a guess at 8,000 is the value based on the pictures and the stuff he has already completed.

Re: What's it Worth? 1991 CrewCab SWB 4x4

I would demand to see the frame cut before considering anything. Back on page 5 is a thread called "Long bed to Short... ." That is prime example of what is proper, and what to stay MILES away from.

Most people should be able to bolt in a crate motor, plug in a 4L80E controller, and grind for a round pattern 205.

He's asking $7500

The problem is he's across the country from me and there is no way to check these things without flying down there.

I'm leaning towards just building my own from scratch...but this truck would've been nice to have as a 4x4.

For $7500 he better be ready to take any picture you want.

I'd say if you want to build your own, and have the time and resources go that route.

Honestly I don't think you could build that truck for what he is asking, sounds like a deal to me. Just the driveline and paint alone probably cost that much, not to mention the time invest to pull off something like that. The 4L80E is a really nice touch too.

Re: What's it Worth? 1991 CrewCab SWB 4x4

Well, I agree you can't build a truck for that price, but here's my thinking:

- I'm really po'd because a month ago I found a 4x4 crewcab with perfect body (no box though, it was a flat deck), good tranny, shot motor, and interior was gone. But, I would've put a different motor and my extra interior I have from a different truck into it. And I could paint it any color I wanted...the guy was asking $800. I thought about it and when I called back the guy had sold it for $600 because he hadn't heard from me --- that was my fault for taking so long.

- But this guy with the blue truck told me today that the 383 "needs a tune-up" which translates in my experience to mean that the motor is probably shot or majorly screwed.

So, what's a guy to do??

Re: What's it Worth? 1991 CrewCab SWB 4x4

I'd say it's worth what hes asking given the frame and motor/tranny are in good shape. The 91 could have, and probably did, come factory with the 4L80E. So I wouldn't bet he bought and installed a 4L80E and controller. I'm sure its what was in the truck. Also, anyone can say a 350 is a 383 with out some documentation. If you really want it, you'll have to all the checking you can, then bite the bullet and make the trip. You won't know for sure until you go look at it. Looks nice to me.

Re: What's it Worth? 1991 CrewCab SWB 4x4

Pretty truck, but helped convince me not to paint my roof white after all. I'd like to know what's involved in putting a 4l80e in my 82. I thought I couldn't because they are computer controlled and I don't have a computer. But if there is a stand alone computer or controller as someone referred to it, maybe that would be a worthwhile endeavor. I want to do a Gear Vendor, but it's pretty far out of my price range. I see cheap 4l80es around from time to time, and I know one would stand up to my big block. Had one behind a souped up turbo diesel plow truck for years and couldn't break it no matter how hard I tried. My th400 shifts and works well, but it desperately needs another gear or two.
Thanks for any pointers on where to look for the info.

Re: What's it Worth? 1991 CrewCab SWB 4x4

I got a bunch of pics from the owner and have decided to pass on this truck, in my opinion there is too much to fix to get it to the point I would want it at verses his asking price + shipping costs to get it here.

I will be on the look out for a crewcab 4x4, but will work to finish my other trucks first.

Thanks for the good advice guys!!
