700r4 Shift Points

My new 'burb has a 700r4. It seems to shift way early to me. It shifts from 1st to 2nd at about 10mph and 2nd to 3rd at around 20mph. I adjusted the TV cable back as far as it would go (per Mike's instructions) and still does the same thing.

My question is, what are the normal shift points for average acceleration? Also, could my TV cable be worn?

What kinda gears do you have? I was thinking maybe check into the governor (the thing that controls the shift points) but I think that's just for WOT shifts...

No clue on the gear setup. I'm sure it is whatever was stock for an '86 suburban 1/2 ton 2wd.

Scott,

as you seen, going toward the firewall raises shift points. Did you try removing the cable from the carb and see if it pull any farther? It sounds like the cable isn't being pulled far enough to me. You shift points are real low. The mounting bracket isn't bent is it?

I haven't removed the cable yet. I'll try that. Guess the cable could be stretched due to many years of use. Also, the mounting bracket did not appear to be bent at all.

I just read something that adding stiffer governor springs raises your shift points also. Do you know anything about that?

After reading what you said again, the part about still doing the same thing after you adjusted it, does it change at all. Are you saying no matter where you put it, nothing changes?

Remove the cable at the carb and see if it has any tension on the cable when pulled by hand. If you can't feel any spring tension, the cable may have come loose in the tranny.

Well, I did mess around with it last night and depressed the D-switch but didn't pull on the slider. That caused the slider to move up a little. So, the tranny had problems shifting into first and second (real slow to shift at same shift points). So, this morning I went back out and pulled the slider all the way back while depressing the d-switch.

Did you move the sleeve toward the firewall as far as it would go with the D button depressed? Let go of the button and open the throttle to WOT? Did the sleeve ratchet through the housing? This is the initial adjustment. Fine tuning a click or two at a time from here gets it perfect.

As for the governor, yes the springs change shift points, mostly at WOT. I wouldn't mess with the governor though. I doubt anything is needed there. But, I guess it's possible someone has changed governors or something. Work on the cable adjustment some more to see if everything is working right there first.
