need help
so i finally got the big block running in my truck a few months ago. the engine ran pretty good but didnt have an exhaust on it, it was open headers so i couldnt hear anything.i finally got around to putting the exhaust and now i can hear that is making noise on top like a loose rocker.i talked to the machinist that did the work and he said it had to be a loose rocker arm. i tried adjusting the valves i dont know how many times and it still made noise.i took it back to him and he tried adjusting the valves several times and it still made noise.he said it sounded like on of the lifters wasnt pumping up so he told me to drive the truck back to my house and see if it would quiet down.well it didnt quiet down at all and he told me is possible that rocker arms are the ones making noise.i have the comp cams magnum roller tip rockers brand new, and he said the next thing would be to try on a good set of roller rockers.i dont know if this will actually fix my problem or not any ideas on what to check or what to do im really frustrated at this point and dont know what else to do.

Re: need help
is it just one making noise or are they all noisy?
and, I have to ask just to get it out of the way: did you follow proper cam break-in proceedure? (if so, that must have been a roaring-good time with open headers)

Re: need help
I have had stamped roller tip rockers on my small block and they sounded like I had a solid lifter cam. but they were the cheap summit-brand
and they all rattled. I would think Comp Cam brand would be fine and I don't see why you'd have to switch to full rollers. If you're adjusting them with the engine not running I take it that you didn't notice any that were loose. do you still have the original rockers laying around?

Re: need help
BTW, I just read some threads on the performance forum on ChevyTalk about noisy valvetrains and the common factor was they were all using Comp Cams roller tip rockers.

Re: need help
When you did the cam breakin, did you use a good break in additive, and have you been using either a oil additive or a oil with sufficient ZDDP since the break in? I'm assuming your engine has a flat tappet cam?

Re: need help
j, again, is it just one or two, or all they all rattling?
I assume you're ready to pop for a new set of full rollers, but if its not the full set making noise there may be another cause such as a sticking lifter or the adjusting nut not holding (friend of mine had to replace the stock adj. nuts with the locking type on his 454)

Re: need help
get a long piece of fuel or vacuum hose and on end to your ear the other end go fishing for the noise.
once you find what ones are making noise move them, if the noise doesn't move with the rockers, it's something else you check for coil bind, are the pushrods hitting anything are all the rockers getting oil |
