Exhaust Systems - Magnaflow

I have a 71 c10 that I am restoring and making a mild resto-mod. I have a 2006 5.3L and 4L60E with Doug Thorley headers. I woudl like to run 3" exhaust. I like a nice deep throaty sound, but don't want it too loud.

What magnafow muffler have you guys used in the past that you have been happy with?

Plan is to run 3" stainless x pipe, magnaflow muffler and turndowns just before the rear axle. Open to ideas...

Thanks

Re: Exhaust Systems - Magnaflow

I hope your thinking 3" single cause a 3" dual would be WAY to big on a 5.3. The bigger the pipes the louder the system is, I would go with a quality muffler and 2 1/2" (largest I would run on a 5.3) or a 2 1/4". Besides a 3" system will not be able to tuck up inside and around the rear axle arms.

Re: Exhaust Systems - Magnaflow

I've used Magnaflow in the past. Nice mellow rumble. Duels with magnaflow straight out the back would be a good combo if you're not looking for loud. Plus, you can't beat the look of stainless. Good luck.

I am confused! You want a true dual 3" system with turndowns, and you "don't want it too loud"? Thats not going to happen unless you run some very restrictive mufflers.

Take the advice of 406 Q-ship, and go smaller size tube with as much exhaust after the muffler as possible.

Re: Exhaust Systems - Magnaflow

The x-pipe should help make up for the lack of back pressure, but 3" is still too big.

Re: Exhaust Systems - Magnaflow

I run straight pipes on my Impala with a glass pack right at the end of the system where it dumps at the rear bumper. The packs keep the rasp down so it doesn't sound like a farm truck, it's loud, but still not so loud that it's obnoxious.

The magnaflows I used to have on it are by no means the quietest muffler I've had on it. I had hooker aero chambers at one point and they sounded awesome.

Re: Exhaust Systems - Magnaflow

let me clarify... I don't mind it being throaty, and somewhat loud... I just don't want "Straight Pipe" loud. I don't want to wake the neigbors with it idling in the driveway.

so pardon the ignorance... I thought 3" exhaust would help with power (maybe not low end, but with mid and top end power). I have a very unrestrictive intake... figured I need an unrestrictive exhaust. My thoughts were... easy air in... easy air out.

My engine is a bone stock 5.3 with headers.

Keep the advice coming.

This statement and 3" don't belong together. lol. I have 3" exhaust all the way back on my truck and it's deep and loud. When it's warming up, if the neighbors aren't awake, they are by the time I leave. I run true duels, no x-pipe and no cats with power master mufflers. My Camaro also runs 3" all the way back with DynoMax bullets. If you absolutely want 3", don't go with a straight through muffler like the DynoMax bullets, they are LOUD. Makes my trucks 3" sound like a factory system. lol.

Re: Exhaust Systems - Magnaflow

5.3 is a fairly small engine that at its best in stock configuration made 325 hp @ like 4800 RPM. You will actually lose HP with a true 3" dual on a 5.3, unless that you have huge heads a cam that pulls to 9000 RPM (even then 3" is too big). 2 1/5 system will easily support 550 hp, 3" is what you use on a 800 hp street car not a 300 hp truck.

I have a Monte Carlo with a 406 SBC (6.7 liters) that makes approx. 440 HP @ 5000 and 470 lb/ft and it pulls like a monster with 2 1/2" and Edelbrock SDT. Believe me when I say most people think they need alot bigger pipes than they really need. Torque is what moves a vehicle, horsepower is just a formula.

Re: Exhaust Systems - Magnaflow

I went with the 2 1/2" duals with magnaflows and an H pipe and I couldn't be happier. It has the perfect rumble, but sounds like a monster when you get on it. I couldn't be happier.
