Oh Crap! my rearend hurts....

***EDIT...Read to new update..4-10-11..***

Or is hurt!
The 72 5-lug 12bolt I got with my truck to swap in is frozen solid...sorta.

Its been in the bed of the truck since I bought it 4wks ago. I finally took it out today and noticed instantly that the axels wouldnt turn, nor would the pinion.

So I took the cover off, and its dry as can be..with alittle rust here and there.

So I call the PO and he said he got it 15yrs ago, and its lived outside the past 5yrs.....

So I turned it on the pinion and poured 2 gallons of WD-40 into it. Figure let it set for a week and soak.

And before you ask, I had 7 gallons of WD-40 as one of the many "parting gifts" from when they closed our plant and kicked us to the curb...

Anyway, back to my sore rearend...

Any chance this can be saved????

I'd think I would pass on that rear end if it was me. If it froze up that bad. May have to get all new parts to be on the safe side if you did continue to use it.(rebuid it) You can inspect it to see how bad it is. Inspect Axle Bearing And Race For Pitting, Corrosion, Or Wear, Inspect Axle Seal For Missing Rubber Etc. Maybe rebuildable. I'm partial to Ford 9"ers myself.

Re: Oh Crap! my rearend hurts....

Does the pinion move just a bit ? is the ring gear moving slightly?? Maybe it is the brake shoes are rusted to the drums?? I ran into this a week ago on a gto rearend.. I had to torch a hole through the drum where the brake adjuster would be and cut the brake adjuster in half...then the drums came off and it turned...

Re: Oh Crap! my rearend hurts....

No drums or brakes on it..just backing plates and wheel cylinders. It doesnt seem to move at all.
I'll let it soak and see if it moves after a couple days.

Its not like you trip over 72 5-lug 3.08 rearends all day...I hope I can get it to work.
I assumed I would have to do axle bearings and seals, but...

Heres a pic I took after the first gallon of WD40. The white milky stuff is from bottom of the can not the rearend.

If the gears are pitted with rust it will not last long and will start stripping metal. Your best bet is to rip it apart and go through it.

Re: Oh Crap! my rearend hurts....

The thing is, the gears look good. I dont see any rust or pitting on them.
Im wondering if the axle bearings are seized?

Id hate to not be able to use it. A 3.08 posi/limited slip is perfect for me.

If it wont turn there is something not right, could be the bearings but hard to say.

I seem to have some new in the box parts that would help you out. Let it soak and then put a big bar between the wheel studs and see if you can break it loose.

Don't know how "N.E." you are in Ohio, or what's in your toolbox - but I have a decent dial indicator and in*lb wrench for when you rebuild 'er. Be happy to loan then to ya when you need them.

Re: Oh Crap! my rearend hurts....

I agree also.... bearing and seal kit.

http://www.ringpinion.com/ProductDet...spx?ProdID=391

They offer another kit that uses Koyo bearings and is about $50 less but I prefer the Timkens used in this one.

Re: Oh Crap! my rearend hurts....

Ok. New update.
So after the 3.08 posi seemed locked up, I bought a non-posi 3.73 5-lug to use.
But I hate the idea of a granny 4spd and 3.73s. It isnt much better than the 4.10s in stock rearend.

So the 3.08 soaked in 2 gallons of WD40 for over 2 weeks. And today with little effort it turns.

So I dumped the wd40 out and looked inside. No chattered teeth or anything that looks ugly.
So I dumped 2qts of synthetic motor oil...just to soak some more. After 2 hours, it spins free as can be.

So now, if I drain it again, and flush once or twice with gear oil, do you guys think I should take my chances and run it?

The 3.73 rear is nice, but Id much rather have the 3.08 posi...

Sorry for the long ramble...

Re: Oh Crap! my rearend hurts....

If it spins freely (not exactly free but as it should with no binding) then I would install it...fill with fresh gear oil and drive it... paying close attention to any noises and such.

After about 100 miles or so pull the rear cover and inspect everything (try to do this with the rearend warmed up from use to get as much oil out as possible). If it looks good button it back up top off with fresh gear oil and go.

Maybe wait a few months and check it again?

On the other hand I would probably replace the bearings and seals just so there is one less thing to worry about.

Re: Oh Crap! my rearend hurts....

Yeah, I wondered about the bearings and seals too.

Thing is, its been sitting,,or should I say, standing, on the pinion for over 2 weeks, maybe 3, full to the brim with WD40.

Not a drop came out of the pinion seal or axle seals. And being wd40 is so thin, I would of thought it woulda leaked somewhere.

Im gonna let it soak in 10W40 synthetic for a few days, just going and turning it daily, then flush with gear oil.

See what happens then I guess.

Re: Oh Crap! my rearend hurts....

Run it! I'm sure it will run with no problems, but if it does, it will let you know. I have a small feeling that those bearing may whine for a bit. If it does whine and it doesn't go away, the bearing may need replacing.
