Got my factory temp guage working..BUT....

I was able to trace the original wire from the guage into taped up bundle of wires in the engine bay. I found the dark green wire for the temp sender and still had the original connection on the wire.

Yesterday I bought a temp sender for my year truck with a guage and not a light.

The issue Im having is the temp rises too fast on the guage. I have a mechanical aftermarket guage also. When that guage shows around 130, the factory guage is all the way to the right. It starts out on the left when cold, but it doesnt take long to sweep to the other side.

Do sending units have different ohm ratings like gas guages do?

Re: Got my factory temp guage working..BUT....

I had the exact same issue with factory temp gauges in my 64 C10 and my 69Chevelle. The parts house temp sending units, and even the ones at a Chevy dealer, have changed part numbers over the years, fit a variety of different applications, and aren't calibrated specifically for your older gauges.

You can buy the correct sending unit at Lectric Limited. I bought their sending units for both my vehicles, and both gauges now work mint. See link...

I'm actually going to be in your neck of the woods this weekend. My brother-in-law and I are coming down for Super Chevy at Palm Beach International Raceway (formerly Moroso Motorsports Park).

My brother-in-law will be showing a beautiful 65 C10 with Alabama tags, metallic blue and white two-tone. I'm not bringing my truck, but rather will be racing my 69 Chevelle, see photo. If you decide to come to the show, look me up!

I've owned it since 1998. Currently has a mild 496 CI motor that runs on 93 unleaded. With 3.42 gears and a 2800 stall, she runs 11.80's at 110+ in the 1/4 mile. I went four rounds at Super Chevy in Bracket 2 over the weekend, and my brother-in-law won his class in the show with his 65 C10. I also won an Editor's Choice To 10 Drag Car award. I'll try to post some photos later.

Awesome car man!! Dig your truck too! So just out of curiosity where did you mount the sender on your truck? Intake or head?

Re: Got my factory temp guage working..BUT....

I have the same problem in my GMC. I checked the link above but it doesn't have any senders listed for the original 305 V6. Would it be the same as any other truck motor from that year?

Re: Got my factory temp guage working..BUT....

Kasey, I actually mounted my sender in the intake, but it will work from the cylinder head just as well.

Creep, the gauge itself would likely be identical between a V6 truck and a more conventional I6 or V8 truck, so I would think the same sending unit should work.
