carrier bearing
so i have this really nasty sounding scraping noise going on with my truck. almost like really bad brakes. its only when the truck is moving. i believe its coming from my carrier bearing. i did alittle reading on our lovely site here. it seems my truck has had some backyard modification. what does yalls set up look like? is this something that i would be able to do with regular hand tools or am i gonna need some specialty tools? ill get a couple of pictures for yall here in just a minute

it does look like its rubbing ! mine hangs from the top on my 65 but there is ones that mount like yours from the bottom i dont know if its a year thing,,but ive replace two on my truck some people i heard used a press i think but i just used my bench vise and a small sledge hammer and tapped the old ones off and tapped the new ones on!!

That is a newer style the one you need I believe has the two mounting bolts/holes going the other way (parrallel to drive shaft) and hangs from the top. I would think the factory crossmember used on your truck, behind the one being used for the carrier currently, should have a mount for the stock carrier.

Don't be too hasty....yer original mount is missing. It's supposed to be sitting in that arch above the shaft in yer last pic. I had trouble finding a carrier drive shaft fir mine, so I had a one piece custom fit and did away with the bearing altogether.

I think the rubber insulator just gave out and let the bearing fall down in the housing to where it can rub. That's a pretty much normal type of failure. IMO, you are better off keeping the type of bearing you have now. The mounting is really much stronger than the kind which has the bolts fore and aft. Those are known to break - the metal part I mean. You can get a heavy duty "billet" replacement for that type, but it is expensive.

That HD carrier bearing normally sits on a plate that is riveted to the bottom inside of the trailing arm crossmember. But in order to mount yours there, you would have to have the front driveshaft lengthened and the rear one shortened. Here's a couple pics........

There is an incredible amount of torque on the middle of the shaft when it is turning a 5000 lb vehicle. With that crazy flat stock Carrier bearing mount, I would not be surprised if it wasn't flexing and allowing the shaft to contact the real xmember, or at the very least allowing it to move under load and cause failure from not being held ridgid.

i think alittle bit of it has to do with my 40 plus year old motor mounts. it rubs quite a bit when accelerating and when i come off the gas it rubs pretty good. but just runnin down the road with a nice steady pedal it doesnt seem to rub. im probably gonna get the same style bearing that i have right now. but i feel like maybe it needs to mount alittle higher to make that first driveshaft more level. and i think ill look into getting some new motor mounts too. yall are awesome either way. lots of knowledge here and everyone likes to help.

I was told by many ( tremec and a few other shops) that I must run a two piece drive shaft in a long bed truck. Well i did my own thing had a local shop build me one. It works great no issues at all, drag strip pass's and all. Sure makes things easier with one drive shaft. Was happy to toss the two piece set up. Total cost for everything under 300 bucks. No drive shaft guru just could not see why I needed all that extra stuff.. seen many long box trucks with one shaft.
For the money hard to beat upgrading to one shaft. |

well i finally went ahead and bought a new carrier bearing. pretty simple install i guess. i wish i had some kinda spacer or soemthing to mount on my "factory" crossmember but i guess it will be fine for now. for any body else that needs to do this you will need a press. i took mine to a local tranny shop and they pressed the old one off and the new one on for free! other than that it was easy as pie!

yeah mine was all tore up. i drove it alittle bit yesterday and im pretty happy with it. no more noise. no more clangin around with the sharper turns. and it seems like it goes into gear alittle bit easier now too.
