securing stuff in the bed...ideas?
i need to be able to store stuff in the bed and lock it up, i know the obvious solution is to throw a tool box back there. but the over the bed rails look doesn't flow with the truck theme. i don't have a ton of cash to buy a nice flush mounted locking bed cover. so i looking for other options, something that fits "flush" or below the bed rails. ideas?

Re: securing stuff in the bed...ideas?
this one is $100 new from tractor supply. so i'd be fine with paying 60 for the used one. it's going to fit perfect up against the front of the bed and below the bedrails. plus it's lightweight so it won't weigh me down much

Re: securing stuff in the bed...ideas?
Better built makes a nice "Chest" style one like that. If you have a Big R by you they sell them there. Definately more than 60 bucks though. I think like 150. But it goes all the way across your bed and doesn't go over the bed rails.

Harbor Freight, $69 or $79 I don't remember. They list it as a Trailer Tongue Box

Re: securing stuff in the bed...ideas?
Are you going to bolt it down or something, or will it just sit in the bed?

Re: securing stuff in the bed...ideas?
There are plenty of tool boxes that fit just under the bed level and open from either side, try Tractor Supply or something along those lines. The better ones have cutouts for the wheel wells, too.

Re: securing stuff in the bed...ideas?
How about a diamond plate chest-type toolbox? I have one, when it sits on the bed floor it is a couple inches below the top of the bed. It's sitting on an L-shaped fuel tank in the picture.

Re: securing stuff in the bed...ideas?
i really like the diamond plate tool boxes in 4x4 trucks, but it doesn't really flow with my lowered 2 wheel drive theme lol i think the one from tractor supply will work out nicely, plus they lowered the price to $79.99 so i think i'm gonna pick one up tomorrow
i'll post pics when i get it sitting in the truck

Re: securing stuff in the bed...ideas?
The problem with the floor mount tool boxes is that you loose floor length for hauling long stuff (plywood, 2x4s, etc.), but if you don't use your truck for work it doesn't matter. I am thinking about building some under the rail side boxes to go over the wheel wells on my long bed. I have a dump conversion so I need to block off that area anyway or the load I am dumping gets caught in front of and behind the wheel wells. I just have some plywood boxes in there now. I am thinking about using 1/2" exterior composition board like Extira and paint it. You can get "pork chop" style boxes for the wheel wells but they are ridiculous expensive and wouldn't give me the sealing I want for hauling dirt, gravel, etc.

Re: securing stuff in the bed...ideas?
I got tired of trying to keep my stuff dry and secure and compromising bed space.
So I got a crewcab and removed the back seat. I tried extended cabs, but there wasn't enough room and it was a pain to get stuff out over the seat back. Now I have toolboxes in the back, dry and locked up. It's a bit tougher parking it, but once you resign yourself to the fact that you're not going to park close to anything and that walking will do you good, it's all good |
