1966 bumpers
The chrome is pealing off my 66 bumpers but no rust. Are they aluminum? Stainless? I have big window, heavy rear coils, deluxe steering wheel and chrome window trim with two tone paint. But no body, bed side trim. Is this unusual? (New Member)

Re: 1966 bumpers
Good ole American Steel!
I'd say the prep process from chroming is keeping them from rusting.... By the way, and ! Awesome truck, what's the plan? Last edited by lakeroadster; 04-26-2011 at 08:14 AM. |

Re: 1966 bumpers
South Carolina truck. One owner, untouched. 250 CID, 3 on the tree. Deluxe except for side trim. I wasn't looking for a truck but saw this at the Charlotte Auto Fair. Owner was getting ready to tow it home so I struck a deal. Needs bed floor and a few patch panels. Has original paint, turquoise (metallic) Poly and white. Big window, long bed. But for side trim and big window it is the same truck restored on Trucks TV. I am not going to shorten the bed. Tucked away in a garage untill I finish my 1947 CJ2A.

Re: 1966 bumpers
Welcome to the forum ralf. What you have is a pretty solid truck with a lot of character. Getting anything chromed these days isn't cheap. Look at replacement bumpers and compare price and quality.

Re: 1966 bumpers
Chromed steel bumpers.
DONT GET RID OF THEM... (unless you sell them to me ha!!) Youll find the originals are of better quality... every after market bumper Ive seen are thinner and of a less superior metal... usually made somewhere other than the US of A. with that said.... coke and tinfoil will bring alot of that back.... and yes it works.

Re: 1966 bumpers
I agree^^^^^ DONT get rid of the bumpers. re-chroming could cost over $800.00 each, but they would be the original bumpers not repop. If you decide to re-chrome them, pick your shop very carefully.

Re: 1966 bumpers
I bought repro bumpers (both) since I didn't have a chrome stock rear. I also kept the stock front bumper. The plating shop said about 300 to redo the front. I think the repro is ok but realy isn't as clear or bright as I would like. If you can rechrome what you have do it. The front repro was something like 140 bucks but if you can't pick it up they will charge you something like 75 bucks for shipping (both bumpers) Once I get close to finishing the truck I'll have the stock rechormed and set the repro aside.

Re: 1966 bumpers
Those bumpers might clean up really nise. I can't tell from the photo's if there is any peeling, but if not, then they should turn out nice.

Re: 1966 bumpers
Ralf,
I believe that is the chrome that is peeling off the rear bumper, that is the nickel plating that is showing underneath. (the steel is copper, then nickel then chrome, plated). TR

Re: 1966 bumpers
the side trim had to be ordered seperately.the custom cab package did not include the side trim.the option number for the side trim was b98.custom cab package consisted of aluminum grill, windshield stainless trim, chrome bezels on dash knobs, custom cab plates, horn ring, white tutone trim on door panels, chevrolet emblem on glove box door, deluxe tutone seat covers with white trim(nylon seat inserts).
