57 column removal

I am trying to get the steering column out of my 57 gmc truck. How do you do it? It looks like the box is permenantly attached to the column, and looks like if the steering wheel comes off the turn signal housing at the top end is to large to fit thru the floor. What do I need tho do.

The box is permanently attached as you said. You remove the box off the frame and slide it out the bottom after you remove the steering wheel and other column add on's. If your not keeping the original for reuse the sawzall the column at the box and slide the coulmn out the top and remove the box from the frame.

Never ruin it. Sell it if you don't want it. No one makes repops of steering columns that I know of. The day that stock old column is worth 1000 or more you'd wish you wouldn't have cut it up.

I won't ruin it. I will try and take it apart carefully. I was just not sure if it was easier to dismantle at the top or bottom.

Re: 57 column removal

I just took mine out. Pulled off the steering wheel then the housing under that slides off. Then there is a pitman arm that needs to come off and 3 bolts on the fame that come off. I had to jack up the truck a couple of inches to get it to slide out underneath.

I went to a bookstore and asked the saleswoman, "Where's the self-help section?" She said if she told me, it would defeat the purpose.
