Sumpthin ain't right

Got raw oil coming out my exhaust. Not much but enough. I'm guessing rings but need some advice.

Re: Sumpthin ain't right

Smokes under acceleration. Oil is black and thin. 15 miles to work and back takes a quart to quart and a 1/2.

Re: Sumpthin ain't right

Do a compression check if you can. what kind of oil pressure you got? that much oil in that short of time can't be good on your bearings. I am by no means an expert.Does it smoke when you first fire it up?There's a lot of smarter folks on here so we can both learn sumthin...

Re: Sumpthin ain't right

As mentioned, oil is getting past the rings and far more than the engine can burn. Based on your description, it will need more than rings. To pass oil at that rate there has to a lot of wear and it will be mess from burning all that oil. If that engine is going to be right, you will likely need to do a full rebuild with new internals and machine work. I am in the middle of that and I expect get it done for about $1,100.

A crate motor is an easy solution if you can part with the bucks. A used motor that runs well is the least expensive option if you can find one.

Stinks at the moment, but you will be happy when you have it done.

Re: Sumpthin ain't right

check the plugs,is it running on all 8?
might tell you a story you don't wana hear

but
i've recently seen part of a program showing a hose from valve cover to header?
but missed the reason of it
wasn't sure if it was smog fix or performance
havn't seen it used before but without a proper valve it might throw oil that way

Re: Sumpthin ain't right

Motormut, that hose is a crannkcase evac. System used on race engines. Uses smog pump check valves in the headers to pull a vacuum in the crankcase.
Ppbr, pull all 8 plugs, see which one(s) are oily. Those will be your problem cylinders. Do a full compression test.
Also, start your truck, pop the oil fill cap off. Is it huffing smoke out of there heavily? If so you have serious blowby (worn rings).

Re: Sumpthin ain't right

if that much oil is come'n past the ring's the one (or more) cylinder is dead, the truck will have a noticable mis.
check the plug's as mention'd and note which one's are oil soak'd, put new plug's in it, if it's the ring's it will smoke really bad till it foul's them plug's again.
if this happen's it's time for major repair's.

Also seems to have a grinding noise in the front.

Re: Sumpthin ain't right

Gravity and air movement will make any leak find its way to the crossmember. Timing cover leaks are fairly common. The engine should be relatively clean and dry above the leak. The grinding noise can't be good. Something is getting damaged. If it is leaving an oil trail, the leak is in a high pressure area (not valve covers). Have you checked for oil in your water or water in the oil?

If you have other transportation options, I wouldn't drive the truck. If you go too long it makes the work more difficult and expensive. You may not be able to rebuild the engine if there is too much internal damage. The rebuild or replacement of the engine will solve the leak.

The compression check that was suggested earlier is a quick way to verify that the rebuild is needed.
