Tape or Screw Trim Question

When installing the outer trim... more importantly the tailgate band. Which method fairs to work better? double sided tape or Screws.. For look, reliability, and ease? how does each work out?

I was thinking screws... mask it, map it, drill it use a drill bit a tad smaller than the screw and just screw into the tailgate itself. Any helpful hints? Tape or Screws?

Screws. Use a step drill bit when drilling the holes.

Originaly fitted of course using screws, but the double sided tape deal that has been mentioned a few times in previous posts does sound like a winner if drilling holes in the body is not your thing.
Provided there is a good quality tape out there that is gonna hold on body trim with wind and road vibrations and all types of weater.

Most new vehicles use some kind of adhesive these days. Over all, it seems to hold real good.

I would vote for screws. I originally did some of mine both ways. Have finally replaced all the taped on trim with screws and/or the metal clips. IMO the tape never looks right as it kept the trim piece away from the body due to the thickness of the tape, even if it's only a 1/16th the trim is still not tight. Also, (at least here in Florida) the tape eventually will release.

3M makes some tape that is amazing. I think its emblem/trim tape. Its black with red covering and comes in a variety of widths, like I said, amazing stuff.

This is good stuff. There are several different kinds of the 3M trim tape, so if you go this route I would go to a automotive paint supply place and toal to them to get the thinnest and strongest adhesive kind they carry. Also several years ago when I was doing paint and body work, they had a batch or 2 of that tape that the adhesive that wasnt sticking as good as it should, so they supplied us with what I guess was a "adhesive primer". It was in a small package about the size of a peppermint, and it had a little sponge soaked with some solution inside, and that stuff was awesome. from then on we ordered that adhesive promoter packets as once we used it, it was on for good. Check with them and see if they have any.

Looking at their website, they have a tape that is only 15 mils thick (.015 inches), so as long as the mounting surfaces are the same, you could use THIS. It also comes in 30 mil, 45 mil, 60 mil, ect. Depending on how well the mounting surfaces match will determine whick tape thickness you use.

No matter what, I would get these to go with your trim tape if you decide to go that route. This stuff is awesome!

The tailgate band has holes in it for the screws. It's going to look odd if you don't use screws.

I would screw it on. We have been doing this for years and the taping it on just does not work good. Maybe in some parts of the country but not here. It always will come loose in places with the heat we have. Most of the kits you buy will have little plastic inserts in the trim and a piece of 3M tape. that just does not cut it here. You will go back and be redoing it. If you want the trim I say bite the bullett and screw it on.

Would you recomend fixing all the lower side trim also with screws Mike?
