2/4 spring drop....not happy with the ride

Last summer, I was contemplating doing a disc brake conversion along with drop spindles and 4" drop springs in the rear. I wasn't sure I would like the look, so I thought I would just do a 2/4 spring drop. Anyway, I got the 2/4 drop kit from ECE which included KYB shocks. I think the truck looks good, but I'm really not happy with the ride quality. It seems like the truck really rocks from front to back when I hit much of a bump, road transition, etc. I want to figure this out before I decide to go ahead with the disc swap. Any ideas?

Re: 2/4 spring drop....not happy with the ride

did the ECE kit include shock relocator brackets for the rear.
if not, that would be a recommended addition.

did you get HD 4" drop springs, or are they pretty wimpy (my 3" drop rear springs are real light-gauge wire).

Re: 2/4 spring drop....not happy with the ride

Thanks for the reply! I did put shock relocator's on. As for HD springs, I don't think that's an option with them....I just ordered the kit, which doesn't give that as an option. However, I'm pretty confident in saying they are not HD due to the spacing in the springs. I'm wondering if this has anything to do with the truck being so level. I just keep thinking it would ride different if I had gone with 3" drop springs in the back.

Do you have a sway bar on the front? If not thats a big part of the problem.

sounds like shocks. when you rock the truck up and down in the front and back then let go does it level out and stop quickly or does it rock for a second? if it rocks the shocks are either set too soft or not worrking if it stops on the upstroke it is some other problem.

Re: 2/4 spring drop....not happy with the ride

I, too, am a big fan of (anti)sway bars (I have one on the front of mine and plan on one in the rear) and join the others in recommending them, BUT

I have a pretty good idea of how they work and what they do and I don't see how a swaybar in any way effects the front-to-back pitch that NC67chev is experiencing

I have one, but I haven't put it on yet. I guess I'll have to go ahead and put it on. Thanks!

I jumped up and down in the bed several times to get it rocking pretty good and it seemed to stop on the upstroke. I rocked the front while standing on the front bumper and it also seemed to stop on the upstroke. As easy as it is, I guess I should put the sway bar on just to rule it out.

Re: 2/4 spring drop....not happy with the ride

you should rock it without being on it , just push down release push again to get it rocking then let go and see if it settles without bobbing. also when you rock it is it really easy to push it down and to get it moving . dont know where you got your springs but they may be to soft. it really could be either end that causes the rocking. I dont see how the lack of a sway bar would be the cause but it may take the ocillating out by stiffining the suspension a little bit. hope this helps a bit!

Re: 2/4 spring drop....not happy with the ride

Well guys, thanks for all the replies! I don't know whether to laugh, call myself an idiot, or both. I pulled the truck up on ramps this afternoon after work so I could get rivets out in order to mount the sway bar brackets. Anyway, I looked over and what did I see...............the daggone bump stops have been hitting. I remember being a little concerned about it when I first put the lowering springs on, but I thought there was enough room that I would never bottom out. Boy was I ever wrong!

Glad to hear you got it figured out at least.

So how's the ride now?

Side note... I don't even have bump stops on the truck at the moment and it has yet to bottom out. (4.5/6")

Re: 2/4 spring drop....not happy with the ride

I haven't done anything to the bump stops yet. My plans all along were to change to disc and put drop spindles on it if I liked the look, so I'll probably just go ahead and get that done over the next few weeks. Then I'll have to make up my mind as to what I'm going to do for wheels, since I'm still running my factory "drum" wheels.

Hmm.... wheels; that's always a loaded choice.

I found some interesting 15x8 military steelies this week, but I really don't want to go that wide. I know what I want, but I don't want to spend the $$$.
