no gas through quadrajet

getting gas to carb...no gas going into quadrajet, no matter how many times I press accelerator pedal, or accelerator linkage on side of carb...filter not clogged...have to spray starter fluid into carb to get it to start...then it runs fine...once I turn motor off, I have to repeat starter fluid procedure...

Re: no gas through quadrajet

sounds like its draining back into the fuel pump try filling the gas tank to the very top it may slow it but sounds like a fuel pump issue......my other thought was that the carb is boiling off the gas...is there a heat plate under the carb??

no...no heat plate under carb, and I took fuel line loose...cranked engine...and had substantial stream of fuel pump out of line...fuel pump seems ok

Re: no gas through quadrajet

Check ball in the accelerator pump is stuck. You'll need to pull the carb apart to fix it.

Re: no gas through quadrajet

I noticed the rod that goes to accelerator pump arm was in the end hole on the accelerator pump arm on carb...I moved rod to second hole, and truck started...don't know if this had anything to do with it, or if I'm even explaining what I did to it right...would this rod being in wrong hole have anything to do with my problem?

Re: no gas through quadrajet

Could be that the accel pump is dried up and not giving a shot, next is the check valve ball (under the screw inside the fuel bowl next to the accel pump). It can't be the fuel draining back, if it happened over night then it could be fuel drain back. Another place to look is the fuel wells under the fuel bowl might be leaking too.

Re: no gas through quadrajet

Putting the rod in the inner hole gives a longer acell pump shot. It possible the pump was not going back far enough to get a fresh fill. Check it now to see if you have acell. pump action. If not your plunger or check valve are bad.

Re: no gas through quadrajet

Which hole the rod is in just determines the pump shot duration. It does reposition the pump plunger slightly in the bore. I would suspect the check ball or the plunger cup. Next time you rebuild, use the old check ball and a punch and lightly tap the ball into its seat. This will help the new ball seal better. Also be sure that the plunger cup has the garter spring inside it.

This is becoming a very common issue. The ethanol in today's gas is horrible on the accel pump seals that come in common kits from parts stores. I have removed several recently (shortly after a rebuild) that are all shriveled and will not squirt fuel. If you buy a kit from Cliff Ruggles, it includes a new blue seal that that today's crappy new gas won't eat up.

Re: no gas through quadrajet

^I'll second that. If you buy Cliff's accel pump, you won't be sorry.

Re: no gas through quadrajet

after moving rod, my 17yr old son used the truck all day hauling scrap metal...he said he didn't have any more trouble starting the truck...will see how it does today...sorta sounds like check ball was stuck, and came unstuck...been meaning to remove carb to check bottom 2 screws on base...they seem to work loose a lot [thought about putting locktite on them]...if I do, I might go ahead and replace accel pump...[having to wait on my shoulder to heal from rotator cuff surgery 3 wks ago...can't raise my arm up]...anyways...thanks guys, and I'll let you know how carb does
