Tired of this Transmission bull.
Ok guys, Lets see if you can figure out the problem. My transmission won't engage.. Put it in R nothing, no movement what so ever. Same as the other gears. I just rebuilt the T-case and No its not in N, The sleeve that goes between the tranny and the T-case i've replaced. The thing is full of tranny fluid. I know the gauge selector is working, or atleast its moving the dial or whatever you'd like to call in under the pan.
I have no idea whats going on. Its a TH350.I just want this thing to be drivable. Thanks, Mike.

Re: Tired of this Transmission bull.
Hate to ask the obvious, is it (trans) full of fluid?

Re: Tired of this Transmission bull.
its a th350! theres a vacume on the back right side beside where the yoke goes into it, check if the hose is connected, if it is check for leaks or cracks.

Re: Tired of this Transmission bull.
Second the vacum line comment. Did you have any problems getting the transmission tight to the block?

Re: Tired of this Transmission bull.
I did not notice the vaccum thing. Where does it hook up to? Intake mani vacuum port? Would this really keep it from not engaging?
And yeah its full of fluid haha. and no problems getting it to the block

Re: Tired of this Transmission bull.
Crank it up, put it in drive then back to park.. If you hear a grinding noise then the transmission is working and something in the transfer case is broke. If no noise and your flexplate is connected to your torque converter, then something inside your transmission is broke and its time for a rebuild.

Re: Tired of this Transmission bull.
Hooked up the vacuum, still nothing.. No RPM drop when into gear. Nothing at all.
Tried moving it around and still got nothing.

Re: Tired of this Transmission bull.
When Ive had modulator valves go, it just wouldn't allow it to shift. Youd still have reverse and 1st.
I'd be looking at the shift linkage and then transfer case linkage.

Re: Tired of this Transmission bull.
When i had the pan off, the linkage was fine, and I rebuilt the T-case. So I know the problem doesn't lie with the transfer case.
I'm ready to just pull this thing and rebuild it as a damn race tranny.

Re: Tired of this Transmission bull.
if the transfer case was bad and transmission working. When he shifts from reverse or drive to park he will hear the parking paw inside the transmission grinding. Since he is not hearing that.. Something is wrong inside of the transmission.

Re: Tired of this Transmission bull.
Put it on jack stands, if its not high enough already, and have someone you trust get in and put it in gear. You can be underneath listening for any "noise" that shoould or should not be there. You should be able to hear the tranny click into gear. Also, what year is your truck, is it full time 4x4? I had one that if both drivelines were not in it made some terrible noises unless it was in "lock" position. I have never had one that made no noise unless the gears on maybe the pump are sheared, but I wouldn't think so. Now I am just typing to myself I guess, Kind of like thinking out loud. lol.

Re: Tired of this Transmission bull.
Have you verified that when you move the shifter that the linkage is actually shifting the tranny? With it off, block the tires and put the emergency brake on and have someone shift it while you are under watching everything.
Start with the simplest things and work your way from there.

Re: Tired of this Transmission bull.
Everything looks okay to me. everythings intact. I could hear a slight whooring sound. I'm thinking its sheared off or the clutches are toast. I'm getting close to just ordering a full race rebuild kit/shift kit/converter and never looking back. But the funny thing is, the rpm's don't drop when i try to put it in gear.. Look at my build thread if you have any questions, its a 79chev on a 79gmc frame with a th350/np205

Re: Tired of this Transmission bull.
Umm.... did you remove the filtre in order to take the picture? Because if not, that's your problem right there.

Re: Tired of this Transmission bull.
I did remove the filter for the picture... Pretty sure that wouldn't be the problem even if it wasnt there.

Re: Tired of this Transmission bull.
Its very very rare for a trans to be so toasted that it wont even make so much as an rpm drop when putting it in gear. For example, i had one that wore out on me a while back i could idle it around all day long and reverse worked as normal. when i pulled it apart there was NO friction material left on the first gear clutches. Still, it would move around the driveway at idle and back up fine. Dropped into dear like nothing was wrong. And for something to have broken bad enough for it to just not move, you would have had to thrown some insane horsepower at it. Like in the 500+hp range. So i doubt anything is actually broken. I really think that something is just wrong with your setup. I would really recomend putting the t-case in 4hi and in all other gears and trying it then too.

Re: Tired of this Transmission bull.
Same thing happened to my TH400. Came out one morning and had no gears at all. Made no bad noises, just felt like it was still in park or neutral. Had it towed to the transmission shop figuring my transmission was toast. Ended up being my torque converter. Went ahead and had them rebuild the tranny anyway while it was out

Re: Tired of this Transmission bull.
Its a little late now... but did you check the shifter linkage?? Ive had it happen to me where the linkage was just slipping around and not really engaging the trans but when i got under the truck and looked the rod was sliding up and down when i moved the shifter.
also if you havent pulled the trigger see if you can manually turn the rod that the shifter slides into. (i think the parking paul is on it) if that doesnt work try dropping the valve body and checking wherever that rod goes. if your hearing a whining from the tranny area it could be the converter or the front pump. i didnt think you would hear that noise if the vehicel wasnt in gear though. you should be able to hear the distint clanks? can you hear that when you move the shifter.( dont forget to set the park brake before you try to listen for the sounds leaning out of the truck. |

Re: Tired of this Transmission bull.
Yeah you can listen to the shifter go through each gear. and I had someone shift through the gear while I had the pan off. The park paul was there and working. And there was no noise whatsoever. also, the rpm's didnt jump down at all.. they remained at the higher idle.

Are you saying you had the truck running with the pan off?!?!? That=not ok! You do know how an automatic trans works right?

Re: Tired of this Transmission bull.
it could be a broken output shaft I broke one in one of are ranch trucks by putting it into park before completely stopping (got in a hurry) and when I got back in the truck I put it into gear and I didn't have anything wouldn't even cause a rpm drop Me and my grandpa took it apart and the output shaft was broken in two. it is not very common for this to happen but it is a possibility I only have seen it one other time. so best of luck and hope you find out what it is
