Re: Steering arm
If it's the one on a Dana 44, alot of penetrant and patience. Under the nuts are cones that are tapered into the arm. I use a flattened cold chisel and tap on the the sides of them. You will have to hammer a little on the arm to shock them loose. when they pop, you may have to tap a screwdriver in the side of the split to lift them off. When beating and banging, dont hit hard enough to damage anything. The one I put in my 69 is from a 85 blazer. It took me a few hours on and off to get it to break free. hope this helps.

Re: Steering arm
Nothing wrong with what Dunenutt said, but I find it to be easier to remove the caliper/rotor and the mounting bracket/dust shield. This give far better access to the side of the arm. You can "shock" the tapered cones better by hitting the side of the arm near them, rather than farther out.
Then as Dunenutt said tap a wedge into the side and lift the cones out. They usually "pop" one at a time...and you can hear it when they do.

Re: Steering arm
Good advice above. I used a 4lb sledge for a while, tapping it on the sides of the arm. I removed the caliper and rotor when I did mine as I was replacing the ball joints.
After using the 4lb sledge for a couple of hours, I gave up and brought out the big gun--the 8lb sledge. I think the "trick" is to hit the side of the arm with many repeated hits as opposed to one big hit at a time. Just bang it hard like a machine gun. When I started doing this is when I saw progress. Once you see those little cone washers move up a little, shout a big Hallelujah!!! Don't give up--it'll come out. Use good ol' PB Blaster, too.

There are few feelings in the world that compare to the feeling you get when you FINALLY see those cones move!
