Factory tach mod?

Hey all! I recently found a cool tach cluster out of a big chevy truck in the scrap yard. I rushed home to try out the tach and I believe its toast! As soon as I start the engine it quickly buries the needle. Has anyone ever successfully rebuilt one themselves? Or has anyone ever taken an autometer gauge and put it behind the stock tach faceplate? I tried searching but came up with nothing...

Thanks!

Re: Factory tach mod?

Yes - I repaired a factory tach by replacing it with different guts.

The factory tach in my Chevelle quit working in about 1990 or so. I discovered that an IROC Camaro had the same numbering and sweep (7000 rpm through 270 degrees) so I took the IROC guts and bolted them to my Chevelle tach face. I hard wired the the tach (since the printed circuit board was no longer relevant), turned the key to the "on" position and slipped the hand back on the post.

Been that way ever since.

Re: Factory tach mod?

The big truck cluster you got isn't neciserily bad, it uses a different curcit board.
