I found a crack in the windshield this weekend, no stone chip to start. it just started under the rubber on the passenger side and is now 6" long just over the weekend.

I guess the window could have been damaged under the rubber that I did not see for this to happen..... Is this normal for these trucks?

Does not happen often but is does happen. I have one that started like that in the windshield of my camper. Started last winter when it got real cold here and now is a foot long.

No, it is not normal for any vehicle. I've had '63's for many years and they both still sport the same windshields they had when I bought them. The glass could have been chipped on the edge when installed, or you could have had a stone hit on the seal and cause unnoticed damage. There is a myriad of ways that crack could have started.

It might be worth reading what the 1960 Chevy Truck Shop Manual offers about windshields that crack at the edges. I probably wouldn't go through all the trouble they describe, but a close inspection of the area where the crack started is probably in order:

I'm sure you already have a plan in place, but I had a similar short crack..5"-6" long and saved it with a Permatex WS repair kit......
I got lucky....... and not knowing the cause of your fracture, you may or may not be able to save it.
However, if your windshield is a nice one....save for the crack...It might be worth trying.
The windshield repair kit I used said it wouldn't work on anything like the crack I had, but I tried it....and ..."Yippee".
I started on the leading edge and worked outward by moving the cup and syringe a couple inches per injection.

Not a bad $10 save.

If u decide to replace windshield at some point and have the chrome trim be sure your glass shop knows what they are doing! I took mine into a pretty experienced shop and they still did not know how to put it in correctly and cracked my perfect factory glass!!! Ask them if they have done some of these in the past (and make
Sure they have done a bunch of them before u trust them with your good glass). Apparentlu there is a different technique for chrome trimmed windshields.. Just my .02.
